THE OREGON DAILY. JOURNAL, PORTLAND, WEDNESDAY, JULY 1. 1S15. BANK'S STAEMS ; SHOW RNANCES IN AN v ENCOURAGING SHAPE State " Superintendent Sar gent Sees Demands of Har vesters in Loans, - MUCH REAL ESTATE HELD I Rational Institutions Save not Taken Advantage to Great Extent of . ' Rediscount Privileges.' -. Balern, Or., July 2L-8tals Bank Su perintendent Sargent today said that there are a number of encouraging: fea tures , in the combined statements of the stats and national banks of Oregon for June 23, as compared with June 80 a year ago, and with May 1. when the last call came. L Though loans havs decreased about 11,000,000 since s June 30. 914, they havs increased 1800,000 during- the last two months, indicating- a less uncertain feeling as to the - future in banking circles, as Sargent views it. v - A considerable pert of the $800,000 Increase was undoubtedly due. to , the demands upon the banks to harvest the crfeps, he says. - , Banks looses Vp." ' He notes a tendency on the part of banks to extend new lines of credit to legitimate enterprises. The statement shows a good percent age of .cash reserves and, as a whole, reveals a very ratisfaetory condition throughout the state, says the bank superintendent. Overdrafts show a decrease of 317S, 727.12, ornearly 50 per cent, as com pared with the call of a year ago. This is a satisfactory condition, and one which the state - banking department and the comptroller of .the treasury have been seeking to attain. Continuing, Sargent says in his re view of; the combined statement: "Perhaps the most unfavorable f ea ture of the statement is the fact that the real estate holdings of the banks have been increased nearly $1,000,000 during the last year. .This has been a year of liquidations and adjustments, .following, a period of several years of depression in real estate securities, and the banks have become unwilling owners- of properties, - which in normal times are worth many times - the amount of the loans they originally se cured. Eventually these holdings will be disposed ;. of i without loss ' to the banks. " l "While there has been a decrease of over $2,660,000 in balances due from other banks, the statement shows an increase of about $900,000 over the statement of June 30, 1914. , ' Privilege BtUl Open, - ."There ha been practically . no change in the . demand deposits and amounts due to other banks during the last . two months, there being a decrease oC nearly $9,000,000 for the year, while the time and savings deposits have ln ireased approximately $2,000,000. , "It will b noted that the- national 1 banks, as yet, have .not taken advan tage of their rediscount privileges with the federal reserve bank to any great extent, the total amount from the state of Oregon at date of this call being only $103,989.63. while the total redis counts and : bills payable of all.1 the banks amount to $2, 2S2, 127-34, an in crease of $1,636,914.79 over the state ment of last year. , The combined statement of all banks in the state of Oregon. 174 state and 88 national, at the close of business, June 23, 1915, compared with their condition at the close of business June 10, 1914, is as follows Loans and discounts.,... This demand was mostly for yellow - pine, ; fir, , tamarack and -the other species used in frame t and foundation work.
