Cir cuit vjudge JJavis yesterday returned to trta of cares on his docket, and referred the taking of evidence in the suit of the McCabe Construction com pany; against the Pacific Railway & Navigation company to Roscoe K. Hunt, his court reporter. The McCabe company is seeking to have the award of the railroad company's engineers for Work done in building the company's line set aside and to recover $40,468.30, alleged to be due from the company, In addition to the $89,304.55 allowed by the engineers. First Church Unit Begins Next Week The first step toward the erection of the new1 First Methodist Episcopal church at Twelfth and Taylor streeti will be taken early next week, when Architects Tourtellotte and Hummel will call for bids for excavation work in connection with the construction of the first unit. The first, unit will cost approximate ly J50.000. , It will go up on street, on the abutting lot west of the present edifice, which was formerly occupied by a. parsonage. The unit will be three stories nigh, faced either with brick or stone, and Its dimen sions will be 60 by 100 feet. The plans call for the erection of the second unit on the site now occu pled by the church building, and when it Is built the building will have cost in the neighborhood of $150,000. Sold Horse; Robbed of Money. Money realized from the . sale of the pet family horse for the purpose or staving orr starvation from his family, was stolen from Matthey Putio, of 438 East Fifty-eighth street, on a North and South Portland street car yesterday, according to a report made by the man to the police detec tlves. Willard, secretary of the West Oregon Lumber company, has submitted a letter to the county commissioners complaining about: the dusty condition of the Linn ton road. He said that since the United Railways quit the streetcar service to Llnnton the residents of that town depend on auto buses, and the dust In the buses is stifling. Eckman, and two daughters, Dorothy and Alberta. McWlUlams Gave Lecture. J. E. Mcwilllams of the Meier & Krank company gave the opening lecture of a new course on business subjects begun at the Y. M. C. A. last night. Discussion of "That Other Younir Man" occupied the attention of Dr. A. C. Gaebelein, conductor of the Port land Bible conferences, at the Y. M. C.
