suit of the McCabe Construction com
pany; against the Pacific Railway &
Navigation company to Roscoe K.
Hunt, his court reporter. The McCabe
company is seeking to have the award
of the railroad company's engineers
for Work done in building the company's
line set aside and to recover $40,468.30,
alleged to be due from the company, In
addition to the $89,304.55 allowed by
the engineers. The trial has lasted 10
days already, and it is estimated that
it will take another month at least to
complete taking of testimony.

Merger Will Be Discussed. Now
that St. Johns has voted to become a
part of Portland, the voters of Port
land will be called upon to accept St.
Johns. The merger of St. Johns with
Portland, will be dlscussejl before the
Progressive Business Men's club to
morrow noon in the Multnomah hotol
by D. C. Lewis. K. B. McNaughton
will npeak on "The Use of Wood and
the Municipal Code." Chairman of the
day will be O. H. Schwerdtmann.

First Church Unit
Begins Next Week
The first step toward the erection
of the new1 First Methodist Episcopal
church at Twelfth and Taylor streeti
will be taken early next week, when
Architects Tourtellotte and Hummel
will call for bids for excavation work
in connection with the construction of
the first unit.
The first, unit will cost approximate
ly J50.000. , It will go up on
street, on the abutting lot west of the
present edifice, which was formerly
occupied by a. parsonage. The unit
will be three stories nigh, faced either
with brick or stone, and Its dimen
sions will be 60 by 100 feet.
The plans call for the erection of
the second unit on the site now occu
pled by the church building, and when
it Is built the building will have cost
in the neighborhood of $150,000.
Sold Horse; Robbed of Money.
Money realized from the . sale of
the pet family horse for the purpose
or staving orr starvation from his
family, was stolen from Matthey
Putio, of 438 East Fifty-eighth street,
on a North and South Portland street
car yesterday, according to a report
made by the man to the police detec
tlves. Putlo said he had received $300
for the horse, and every cent of It
was taken. The loss leaves the fam
ily practically destitute.

Complains at Oust. E. H. Willard,
secretary of the West Oregon Lumber
company, has submitted a letter to
the county commissioners complaining
about: the dusty condition of the Linn
ton road. He said that since the
United Railways quit the streetcar
service to Llnnton the residents of
that town depend on auto buses, and
the dust In the buses is stifling. The

Eckman, who died last Sunday, left
a widow, Mrs. Dora I. Eckman, and

Funeral services were held at the par

interment was in Rose City cemetery,

ily resides at 1069 East Thirty-third

Mcwilllams of the Meier & Krank
company gave the opening lecture of a
new course on business subjects begun
at the Y. M. C. A. last night. Mr.
McWilliams had as his subject "Writ

unable to be present.
