MADE IMMENSE FORTUNE Kelson's Wewspaper Plant Regarded aa Modal la Many Ways and Was Aetirely Directed by XClm, Kansas City, Mo.. April 13. (U. P.) , -William R. Nelson, owner of the Kansas City. Star, died at his home here early today after an extended ill ness. Colonel Nelson was 74 years old. He was the sole owner and editor of the newspaper, which he had built up, and up to a month ago was active - In the management of the Star, despite his Illness. After the last Republican national - convention, when the Progressive party was organized, Colonel Nelson was the first noted editor In the country to come out in support of Colonel Roose- velt. He built his own paper mill, and the Star, of which he was sole owner. Is reputed to be the finest newspaper plant In America and possibly in the world. The fortune of Colonel Nelson Is "estimated at millions. - Eugene Field, who was conducting a humorous column in the Kansas City Times, then a rival of the Star, dubbd Nelson "Colonel." He was not a mili ' tary officer, but the title given him by Field stuck. Haleon Was "Big" MLan. "Baron" Nelson, as he was familiar ly known, was one of the big, upstand ing figures of present-day American journalism. From the humblest beginning -he made the Kansas ftity Star one of the best and strongest newspapers in the United States. Big of mind, big of .heart. Nelson put his soul into the Star and succeeded in making it a remark able force for better things. ' He had one motto, "Get Things Done." His paper had one standard, publirsaservice. From September 18, 1880, when Nel son and his then partner, Samuel K. Merse (afterwards consul-general at Paris) acquired the Star that paper has led every fight for reform and better ment In Kansas City. His great, forceful personality domi nated the publication, for Nelson was a fighter and his paper fought some of the greatest campaigns ever waged toy any newspaper. Mads Kansas City Beautiful. At the very start of his Kansas City eareer he won a bitter franchise fight over the street railroad company. He led -the fight for a Kansas City beau tiful that turned the Missouri city : from a barren, desolate, bleak place ' Into a modern city with..a splendid sys tem of boulevards and parks. He pio neered the fight for an open Missouri river. ' Early appreciating the influence ex erted by women in moral issues he catered to women in the columns of the Star and made it a paper that ap pealed to women as well as men. Under his direction the Star was one of the . first papers In this country to exclude liquor advertisements form its col umns. Moving from place to place, the Star . grew and Kansas City grew with it until finally it was housed in its pres-' . ent home, a newspaper office in which every one In the editorial staff from the highest to the lowest is in one great big room. Nelson even brought his business manager upstairs from the counting room and placed him In the same room with himself in order, he said, to keep him .from being narrowed by continual contact with advertisers. Championed Commission Form. One of the great campaigns con ducted by the Star was that for a com- mission form of government. In order that the Star might put the proposition squarely before the people members of - the Star staff spent months in investi gating city government by commission in other cities. In fact, they became so well informed on the subject that they became experts and were in de inand in all parts of the country as lecturers. The Star was long printed In brevier type, whereas most, newspapers use nonpareil. Nelson adopted the larger site through sheer accident. Power having been shut off it became neces sary on a certain occasion to set type by hand, brevier being used. Nelson liked it so well that thereafter this type' was used exclusively. In Kansas City the Star hag always been a second gospel in spite of oppo sition of every sort. Stories are told of. Kansas City people who have lived there for years and have yet to find a -single Individual who doesn't read the Star. - So great has been its influence that Charles H. Started in Indiana. Nelson was a pioneer in selling papers by the week, 10 cents beins? charged for six afternoon editions of the Star and the Sunday paper.! And the price was kept at 10 "cents ; when he acquired the Kansas Ciy Times, a morning paper, 13 issues being .deliv ered at the reader's door for this price. Mr. Nelson had his newspaper start at Fort Waynej Ind., In 1878, when with Samuel E. Morse he acquired the Fort Wayne Sentinel, going to Kansas City two years later. Previous to embarking in the news paper business he was a sea island cotton planter in Georgia, a contractor and a bridge builder. With his news paper, however, he developed into a town and nation builder. Once asked, "What is the greatest single factor in making a newspaper?" he said: "Reporting. The reporter .who can get his facts straight is the real man in a newspaper office. Editorial writ ing has been magnified beyond its merit. I don't believe in essays at all. The man who writes editorials ought to know -what he is talking about.1" Helson Was never Satisfied, Even-as Nelson grew older hi spurred himself on to do more with his paper. He was never satisfied with his per sonal work and always sought to do better. And although subjected to ceaseless attack met every onslaught calmly and kept plugging on with the Star. The Star is one of the few papers in this country that makes its own print paper, this, being another of his ideas. In later years he had spent a. large share of his time at a summer home in Magnolia, Mass., and raised cattle and yachted as diversions. He was the founder of the Western Gallery of Art in Kansas City. In appearance the "Baron" was short and chunky with a shock of unruly white hair and marked face. Salem. Or., April 13. Governor Withycombe has issued a conditional pardon to Helen Geren. committed to ! the penitentiary from Multnomah county for obtaining money under lalse pretenses. She is required by the conditions or her pardon to wind up her business affairs as speedily as pos sible and to leave Oregon within 60 days. Friends of Mrs. Geren asserted that considerable property to which she holds title would be lost through sheriffs sale if she could not get out to arrange for Its redemption. Her father, 70 years old, has been an object of charity, and her sister is dying in Connecticut, they assert. Mrs. Geren will go to her sister and take her father there.
