'THAW IS DESPERATE I OVER HIS CASE SAYS ! ; WOMAN INTERVIEWER He' Receives Her, Entertains - Her, but Is Silent on Ques tion of His Plans. oo d Ju dgmen t-Unusual Economy by en is "VISIBLE, NOT AUDIBLE" Xnterrlwr ZUtjn tot Xiunchaon, ana Thy Slsonfes War and t n Seed Campaign, bat Mot Harry' Case. Overstocks Surplus merchandise caused by the overpurchase of goods, owing to the uncertainty caused by the war and our determina tion to reduce this surplus dur ing this sale, affords exceptional and unprecedented reductions ordinarily not possible. The thousands who find it ex pedient to exercise unusual economy will find it greatly to their advantage to " purchase from these superior stocks throughout the house at sub stantial savings. By Ida Patterson. Manchester. N. H., Dec. 29. Harry Thaw wrh nervous and gravely mute regarding his cane today. A newspa 'pr writer whom he Knew he bade to ltinrhpon at hi.i prison home and pre sented to his mother, who waa visiting him. "I am visible, but not -audible," he aald to the reporter'.. He performed his dutlen as host in silertre. Have for . palse of the waffles and honey which he ate with enjoyment. He left his KueHt for a few momenta to attend the j furnace. Always in his wake, like two j Khadowu, were tils jailers, Sheriff Drew and Deputy Sheriff Stevens. ,; Mrs. William Thaw, who arrived from Plttstiurwr on Christmas day to epend the 4ioIfdays with her unfortu- . rate son, sat in the sunshine flooded pitting room of the white mansion at No. 2146 Elm street, knitting a stock ing. Knitting for Soldiers. j "It will find its way sooier or later,' I aupposa, to the. scene of war," she said. On the lounge and on the small table in the corner were packages wrapped In gay red ribbon still unopened. "They are Harry's." said the silver haired woman, outwardly so serene and Inwardly in a tumult of anxiety for the tall man with the restless eyes, the allow face and the brown hair turning gray In the tufts above the ears and about the temples. Harry Thaw sat down at tne piano and brilliantly dashed off a few bars, then tired of them begore he had fin ished and wandered about his prison home posing for photographs. Wot tbe Time to Speak. "It Isn't the time to speak," he, said with a restless glance, tapping An Up with his forefinger and smiling his quick and quick vanishing smile. Never la he beyond eye ranse of the pjJr of men who are his sleepless keepers. Sheriff Drew, fat, benevolent with a ready smile, is not in himself a terri fying spectacle. Sheriff Stevens is cast in harder mould. He Is one of the grim gray men that only New Ens land .produces, men with sharp eyed that would send a bullet straight to Its target ' It ia aii ordeal that raps the nerve to be ever under espionage. Miss Cox, who is Mrs. Thaw's companion, sat between the Jailors at lunch and looked restless. Talks of Seed Campaign. Secretary Itlc-e, a handsome young chap, to whom dancing would seem more natural, eat smiling midway of the board. Mrs. Thaw, prompted by her son, talked of the seed campajgn during the time of drought in Nebraska 1 years ago, and 1nr part in It. Hosp! tallty was there. There could be no question, of that, but a deep and terri ble anxiety dominated it. Must the nervous man with the rest lesa eyes return to the hosptal? Was the decision of the supreme court, as 'hla 'attorney had said, final? Wai there no hope? The state that is with out hope1 is desperation. Desperate minds breed dertpcrate deeds. Is Harry Thaw planning as lie talks absently? What Is the .silver crowned mother fac ing In the new year? Nehalem Fishermen Want Open Season rirat 8tpa Toward KQTiet for Legis lation Next Tar Taken at Becent Meeting of Zntereata Affected. NeJialem, Or., Dec. 29. A meeting of the fishermen of Nehalem Bay was held hpre to formulate a plan to have the closed season on nalmon removed. At present the 20 days from Novem ber 20 to December 10 are closed tor fishing In the river and bay. No other part of the county ia similarly affect ed. Tillamook Bay has no closed sea son, and the fishermen there have this 20 extra days of fishing more than the local men. Kmil Iarson, president of the association, waa appointed to take the matter up with Kepresentaive T. B. Handler with the idea of having a bill placed before the legislature to relieve tbe situation. Not only are the fishermen injured by the closed " season, but the best part of the fishing time comes Just when the men cannot place their nets: on the river.' Business men of the valley are working With the fishermen I ami c-ivlncr them hearty support. A ! strong resolution will be sent to the legislature asking that the relief be granted. The fishermen on the river are I forced to go to considerable expense j for their gear: in fact, much more j than those oniTillamook Bay. and they: hve been unable to clear themselves ' with the canneries or pay for their nets during the last six seasons. I With 20 days taken out in the best part of the season, the fishermen here; are greatly handicapped. They say' they cannot see why they should be , forced to stop during a closed season . wlien the fishermen on other waters of: the county do not have to. j tlustrial Y. M. C, I A.
