These figures are based uuon the ton nage of all vessels of over 100 tons engaged in trade, whether domestic or foreign, on ocean, river and lake. This country ranks second in num ber and tonnage of vessels engaged in commerce, but this is due to the vast number engaged in lake and ocean coastwise trade, since the number, of American veubels engaged in foreign trade, according to reports received by the buruau of fort l an and domestic commerce-, depurtinfint of commerce. According to a recent statement of Lloyd's, out of an aggregate tonnage of 47,000,000 gross tons in 1918-1914, 40 Der cent were credited to Ureat Bri tain, 11 per oent to the United States, 11 per cent to Germany, about five per ent each to Norway and France, three per cent each to Holland, Italy and Japan, and from two and three-fourths to one and three-fourths per cent to Iiusela, Sweden, Austria-Hungary, Den mark, and Bpaln. The carrying trade of the United States shows a marked growth in coast Wise and lake traffic and a striking lalecline on the ocean.
