To the Ed itor of The Journal I wish a little space In your paper to discuss the re cent elimination of land In Lake coun ty and the present and future of this grand cow, broncho and sheep country. Some 15 or 20 years ago I often passed through this section of the state, riding In a dusty rig behind tired and thirsty horses or bronchos, fath eroften making 20, 30 and 40 miles without water. But things have changed. From the time you near Fremont, and from there on almost to Lakevlew, one need not drive or walk, In alraeot any direction, five miles without coming upon an abundance of water. Often the .wells are not more tha'n one half or a mile apart; many of them are 18 Jto 35 feet deep, and with good water, too. In some local ities there are wells 70 to 160 feet deep, with windmills to do the pump ing. These wells, In almost every in stance, are in localities wher T wan told In my earlier trips that It was-' useless to even try for water, as one would have to drill 1000 to 1400 feet. A vast change has been wrought In the past eight years, and especially In ' the past . four. Now you can travel over some of the best auto roads In Oregon and see barb wire fences for 20 miles or more In every direction. The fuzzytall has almost eliminated him self, and the people haye homes where be and the sheep used to roam. j Sheep Are Profitable. The cow is here to stay for many years, with an. Increasing demand, and there Is a tendency to raise some fine bred horses. Sheep, too, I believe, will multiply when the farmer realizes, as he ' will under education, that sheep will pay him, not only in wool and mutton, but also In fertilizer for his land. Sheep are bound to become more popular on these 320 acre tracts. Every rancher should keep at least 100, and every rancher vftjll when better Judg ment shows that It's money to do so. It was some time ago written that this country was fit only tor Jackrah bits, coyotes and sage. I see by travel ing over this country that the man who is tilling the soil and is using his brains and muscle Is succeeding. It Is true that many are doing little, but that Is ' easily accounted -for. Some took up land with the expectation of selling out for a few hundred dollars and hiking further. Many are too poor to-do but little, and that class in cludes the bulk. - .The poor man has to travel in and out, sometimes long distances, to make a few dollars to live on during the winter. He may be brainy and muscu lar, but he's got to have staying qual ities to win and most of these men will win. Many a lonely wife is hold ing down the claim for herself and husband. Women With Brains. j I recently talked wth a woman who had just returned from the east. That family Is to make proof this coming week. She said that during the five years she was here her husband was with her one year. There Is many an - old maid holding down these tracts with a nerve that is astonishing and doing even better than many would-be brainy young men. j Another woman and her uncle have i one of the most promising places in ! this community. Visit the place and ' you will see there Is "git" and thrift j around.. A splendid crop Is growing; the ground looks neat and clean. This woman has Just received bacteria from . the agricultural college to inoculate j the land for a crop of dry-land alfalfa, i and she is now preparing to sow. It's no supposition; It's reality. All this country needs is cultivation, i Think of what this woman is doing. : She knows the vast meaning of bacte- i ria to farming. What a change our . agricultural- college is bringing about 1 especially to arid soil! Think of the vast benefits our farmers are deriving from the agricultural schools. Again I say, H's no experiment it's real. Country Veeds Workers. , What the country needs Is workers agricultural students .that are brainy and ambitious. There are many prom-. lsing young men and women in the , cities whose parents could well afford; to send them here to a land of sun-, shine and beauty, where opportunity is unlimited. There are chances for for- i tunes In raising stock and tilling the land. : There is plenty of room for the i homesteader. There is land Just as ' good as any yet taken. A little frost J I need not depend on farming for a liv ing the bunch and rye grass will do it for them. But farming here will yet succeed beyond expectations. The rush is on. Already little houses and big 320 acre tracts can be seen on every side, with now, and then a schoolhouse. As I write I can al most hear the whistle of the locomo tive making Its way westward In the cow country. Let her come; there will be many patient waiters, and many homes made happy by the whistle's greeting. T. H. M. STOCK -WILLED TO HIS SON . Matschek, with Instruc tions that when the son becomes 31 years of age, be shall take up the busi ness and operate as long as it can be operated at a profit.
