Mat Wetle, 39 yciirn old. a native of Oregon and deck hand on the Columbia Rock &. Hand company's tug Hampson, was (IiD w nn in the Columbia river at the foot of Ninth, street ;, esterday when he slipped from a ladder' while board ing the vessel. The accident occurred at 3:40 In the afternoon and his body was recovered a half hour later by Captain K. P. Parker, by the use of sturgeon hooks. Wetle leaves a mother. 73 years old. and sisters, residing In Portland, where the funeral will be held. K. B. Grun start, Wetle's brother-in-law, who la pilot of the Sampson, left for Portland last night to complete funera arrangements. TOWBOAT ALARM' 18 SOLD Craft Brings In Enough to Cover Outstanding Claims. The river towboat Alarm was sold at public sale this morning to satisfy the claims of creditors. The1 sale was at the north door of the postofflce, and was conducted by Deputy United States Marshal Leonard Becker. The vessel was bid In by A. W. Lambert, an east side merchant, who was the mortgage holder for $876, the amount of the claims. Only two bids were made, the other being for $850. The steamer was libeled by creditors sev eral months ago and on a hearing be fore Judge Bean early this month, she waa ordered sold. BOAT MAKING SLOW VOYAGE Japanese Steamer Sbinkal , Main Is Twenty Days Out. Twenty days out of MoJV the Jap anese steamer Sbinkal Maru coming to Portland to load lumber for the China .Import & Export Lumber, company making unusually slow time and con siderable speculation as to ttie reason for her slow passage Is being Indulged in. The steamer is to load at the in-man-foulsen Lumber company and much of her cargo is already cut and waiting for her. She sailed from Mojl March 29, according to a dispatch re ceived by Fritz Klrchhoff, local agent for the company. ALONG THH WATERFRONT Discharging the first foreign cargo received on the new public dock was finished at noon today and the British steamer Lord Lonsdale will move up through the bridges to the Northwest Bteel company this afternoon. She has 600 tons of steel to discharge there The Dollar Steamship company, which takes the steamer after she reaches the Sound, has decided to load her at Grays Harbor and BelMngham. Cargo taking on the German bark Osterbek commenced this morning at Prescott. She is loading lumber for the West Coast. Captain J. O. Faria, relief command er of the Pacific Steamship company, was a passenger on the steamer Rose City when she sailed this morning. The steamers Saginaw and Shasta will sail for the south tonight, the Saginaw stopping at Astoria to take on a small part of her cargo. Import duty on 424 bales of burlap received in bond from Pugt Sound this morning would have been $70J0 under the old tariff laws. The goods enter free now, however. Tlie steamer Atlas, leaving this morning from Willbridge, brought 16. 000 barrels of oil for the Standard Oil company. The tank steamer Boma brought 25,000 barrels of crude oil for the Union Oil company. John N. King has succeeded F. West rup as mate of the steamer J. B. Stet son. Return cargo on the American-Hawaiian line steamer Paraiso. will in clude about 500 tons of salmon. Mas cara bark and general cargo. The steamer J. B. He fa vored, the completion of the sewer to Monta villa at once, with a saving of about $5000 by not laying it so deep as planned.
