The proposed opening of East Burnslde street eastward from Forty-fifth street to where It would merge with the Base. Line road, which is now being agitated by the clvlo and Improvement bodies in that section of the city, Is arousing more general Interest than any similar . Improvement proposed in many a day. The more the proposition la looked Into the greater the wonder that the Vast population to be benefited by' the opened street have not risen Ionic ago and demanded of the city that the work be done. East Burnslde Is a hardsurface thor oughfare from the river to East Forty- fifth street, at which point not only the paving but the street also comes to an end. There Is no other East Side thor oughfare, running east and west, be tween East Morrison and Sullivan's Gulch, that Is paved as far east as Forty-fifth street. The opening of Kast Burnslde from Its present term inus at the eastern line of Laurel hurst to, the Base Line road would not only give relief to several thousand people, but it would give a nearly level grade street to the eastern boundary of the lty, thereby obviating the necessity of horse and auto traffic taking the dan gerous curved road that now skirts around the north side of Mount Tabor, Another advantage In opening East Burnslde beyond East Forty-fifth street is the ract that the extended street would make available a large area of valuable residence property that is now in little demand for the reason that it is practically bottled ud. Com bining the figures from these cities it Is found that permits were issued last month for 17,65$ buildings with an ag- J gregate value of $67,986,692. In August, 1912, there were l, 73-permits issued having a valuation of $71,741,863. While this is a large decrease, in fact the heaviest reported in some years, it has little significance when taken in con nection with the vast volume of build ing in progress in this country during the past 10 years. It is simply a re flection of the tight money market which is affecting all sections of the country alike. . . Pendulum Went One Way.
