In the West buying of the new clip has been re sumed but not in .snv extensive man ner. Two rJlhric mill, representative's are miner aggressive buyers at top prices. The shipments of wool from Boston from January 1 to May 8. Inclusive, were 6D.27s.laZ pounds, against So, 405, 228 pounds for the same period last year. The receipts from January 1 to May 8. inclusive, "were 62.034.624 pounds, against 91, 575. 15 pounds for tne same period last year. In a late Issue, the New' York CJiam ber of Commerce Bulletin -says: - The prevalent opinion on the domestlo wool - market. is that prees will not go much - below today's levels for some time to come. The downward tendency which has been so strongly in evidence for several weeks past seems to have bean checked for the time being. From the west came reports that growers are firmer than they have been for some time and there Is less disposition on the part of eastern holders to part with tlmlr wools at figures under the cost of replacement plus a fair margin of pro fit. According to the statements jnade by purchasers who are at present In the growin districts a chunge. of sentiment appears to -have come over wool growers during the past week or tw- The nacKbone or the wool growers seems to have been stiffened, as they are re fusing to entertain nronosltlonS that buyers consider ver" reasonable In the circumstances. The only explanation vouchsafed for this cliange is that the growers have come to the conclusion that the chances, of free wool are more remote Just now than they were a frt night ago. The opinion Is that the tariff bill passed by : the House on xnursaay win be moameu in a numoer of important particulars. Most wool factors look for a i ner cent ad val orem duty .on wool, with correspond ing Increases In the rates on tops, yarns and piece goods. So widespread, lias tins opinion become during tne past week that holders of raw material see no reason .for making further conces- lons. - On the other hand some well 1n- nformed wool merchants contend that schedule K will be enacted into law n its present shape.. It Is rather inslg- mcant. however, that even tnese mer- hants are not willing to sacrifice their wools. The supply or raw material' of last Season's sheaving Is not considered burdensome. Manufacturers, it U be lieved, have not much wool on hand,' although the supply of tops and yarns Is said to be sufficient to meet the requirements of the immediate future. . When the recent purchases ot new clip wools are received the available supply will not be augmented to any great extent, as the contracts entered into. are said to be not very extensive. Were the quotations on new clip wools reduced much below prevailing levels sellers would have to pocket losses, as some of the brices paid In the west were relatively high, if the reports re-f celved were not exaggerated. Some moderate-size lots of fine medi um territory and inodiun were reported sold tnisWeek at 52c and 50e. scoured, figures that dealers Rre using as a basis of comparison with foreign wool values. One of the leading worsted spinncrn received quotations this week from London on Argentine wools of a son that can be compared with fine medium territory. The price of this Particular description, which would yield U6 per cent clean wool, was 4Sc iaivied on a free wool basis. In the eventtof a duty of 15 per cent being adopted these wools would cost 66 c a pound. It is more than likely, how ever, that domestic wool values would rebound If the new tariff bill called for a dutv of 15 ppr ent. so that domes- ttcrwlyeiriiTg-itt-g6rtttprestlnt wouto! for tlie day. The North Puclflc Fruit Distributors will probubly not do business as a selling agency this year, but the organization will be held ' intact so that at any time which appears propitious it may gef into the field as a marketing agent for the fruit of the northwest. J. H. Bobbins, bead of the Vaklnia Valley Fruitgrow ers association, and slated for manager or tne selling agency, as a result ol tne recent meeting of fruitgrowers at We natchee, Is of the opinion that it is Wise io let tne project drop for this year. Three things are possible for the dis tributors, be says: to hold the organi sation intact, with occasional meetings, exchanging Information and being ready to proceed with the original plan when the larger districts are unanimously In Its fayori. to go ahead witli. the-oentrai selling agency without Wenatchee, or to adopt the suggestion of Wenatchee and make of the organisation a machine for advertising and exploiting the box ap pies of the northwest. Unexpected strength developed in all wheat, months -today. A, very strong upturn of lV4c to lc was made following an early break to somewhat lower prices during the morn ing'. -When July wheat weakened -to 88V4C not one buying order in ten could be executed . until a recovery started. The real cause of the excited buying and strong advance of the last hour to day was the less favorable news from the southwest. There was enough In the complaints coming. from Kansas and elsewhere to indicate that the big bumper harvest is to receive some set back and with this in -front of the trade there ia likely to bo a broadening of the market and a continuation of strength. A Chicago crop observer reported sev eral big counties In Kansas materially lowered in condition the pas t wo- weeks. One commission house in the local trade was credited with buying nearly 2,000. 000 bushels of July and September. There was general talk of a leadinz bear covering on a large scale. Short sellers of the morning were alarmed by the character or teaws ana covered on the advancing market. Sales of 200,000 bushels cash wheat were con firmed' at the close. The wheat goes from a local elevator . concern ; which took it on May delivery to an eastern export house. Northwest and -south-west-were right-4n line with the - ad vance here.
