GLOOM S BE U.0FO.ATJATE II Yl ope Fails as Returns Indipate Defeat of Important-Meas-JL ure; Anticipated festivities "Abandoned. : Uo (Speclil To Th Journal.) University of Oregon, Eugene, Or., Nov. 7. A huge Yally and student dem onstrations which were expected to occur Hut evening upon arrival of news that the university mlllaga bill had passed did hot take place. Instead of a general turning loose of student en thusiasm, to relieve feelings pent up during the past two years while1" the university . has been handicapped for lack of support, a sentiment of depres sion existed from the fear that the measure had not carried, The .situation has been very tense and college work has been more or less demoralised. Yes terday afternoon a report was received giving a very slight majority, for tho bill In the totals from a number of In complete, , county returns. The news spread about the campus like wild fire. An-extra of the college paper was rushed into prtnt and a rally was ordered. J.ater reports, however, checked the ap pearance of the paper, and subdued the rally -enthusiasm.- - It was realised that If the measure passed it would be by a To Efface Age-Marks From Skin and Hair - Any woman can easily get rtd of a sallow, coarse appearance of the skin rfl make herself appear several years younger by using a lotion made from dunces of spurmax, 2 teaspoonfuls of glycerine and-a half pint of witch hazel (or -hot water). This lotion will give to an oily, shiny skin a pink, youthful appearance. It does not show like face powder, but lasts longer and Is splendid for cold sores, pimples and freckles and other com plexion upsets. Spurmax can be bought at any drug store and pre pared at home at a small cost. After It Is once tried it Is liked so well that ft Is always used in place of face pow der as It Is better and has proven to be a wonderful whltener and skin beau tlfler. - Everyone admires a beautiful head of hair and it is easy to have It if the hair is properly cared for. Try hampoolng the hntr onn every two or three weeks with a teaspoonful of canthrox dissolved in a cupful of hot .water, It lathers abundantly, the scalp thoroughly, stops r..l lrlta t Ian and makes tb kind nf ahampoo. Soap Is dangerous to use on the scalp, as the "froe" alkali in it kills the hair. Canthrox makes the hair soft and glossy, dries quickly and is now being used very exten sively by the best class of hairdress ers. When prepared at home, can throx shampoo is decidedly inexpen sive. All druggists handle canthrox. Adv. " THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, THURSDAY- - i SBBSBgBB , 1 .. JBi- Ml JLUIU, I EVENING, NOVEMBER 1, 1812. IS very - narrow-margin and many - de spaired Its Vaasage. ' The matter Is quits serious to ths college, for the classes have been crowd ed and hampered by lack of actual lec ture room land apparatus, but existed with the hope that this election would furnish relief. The university has far outgrown Us present support, and what the actual result of the loss of this measurs, will be Is problematical One group of boys, 4 petitioning for a national fraternity , chapter, have" their chapter at stake, for the national organ ization realizes that with ample sup port Oregon will become; a great west ern Institution; without It, they do not care to establish themselves here. The sentiment of student depression was amplj Illustrated by the sobs of one co-ed, who was heard to mourn over Xha-rturna,r-Hf -fth-4-a-eaBdldat on the state ticket, ,'Tflpa got left out, they say; the mttlage bill failed, and I don't even know that woman suffrage carried. What's the use,' anyway?" Linn Retire Ancient (Sheriff. (Snxciul to Yb JurnsM , Albany, Or., Nov. 7.Wlth complete returns now 'in from St out of 34 pre cincts, Linn coUnty shows nearly as many votes for Wilson as for Taft and Roosevelt combined. Roosevelt leads Taft slightly.. y Lane, for senator, carried the county heavily, with Selling next and Bourne a weak third. Locally the principal fight was on the wet and dry question, for the city of Al bany and on the of rice of sheriff for the county. Albany has gone dry by a good majority and Bodine has a safe lead for sheriff, T. ft. Smith, the pres ent sheriff, has held; the office for six years past, and, with previous terms and deputyshlps, has been connected with the place for 30 years. He Is a Democrat. Owing to tho large ballot and ths fact that many of' the city prectnets have unusually large rfeglstratlons7the count ing has been slow and results are still dribbling in from all quarters. In many places the counting of the votes on the different measures was left until after all the votes ton offices had been count ed; consequently few figures are avail able yet on the measures. From the returns that are now In, however. It Is believed that the equal suffrage, meas ure lost In this .county by a small mar gin. Most of the other measures were lost, but by heavier majorities. The majority rule amendment, the single tax measurs and that to abollBh cnpltal punishment have been snowed under, ac cording to present returns.
