Diren, pastor of the (Spokane Avenue Presbyterian church, of SePwood. will accept an appointment 'under the board of home missions, and will go to Petersburg, a small village In southeastern Alaska. This announce ment was made to his congregation last 'Sunday. Petersburg has a population of BOO or 600 American people, with no church tervlces except thoBe provided by the Presbyterian church. For some time this pastorate has "been vacant, and many attempts have been made to get a pastor to accept the position. It was only recently, when it was seen that the post might remain vacant permanently, "that Rev. Mr. Diven accepted the ap 'polntraerit. Before coming to Portland Rev. A' meeting of the congregation of the ISpokane Avenue church has been called ifor Thursday, October 3, to unite nrith 'the pastor m asking the presbytery of Portland to dissolve the pastoral rela tion. The presbytery will meet Octo ber 7, probably in the new church house of the- First Presbyterian church, to take up the matter. . Rev. Mr. Diven will be the only minis ter la -the region of Petersburg. He will leave for Alaska shortly after the meet ing Of the- presbytery. . Each department Is presided over by a superintendent thoroughly con versant not only with the different grade work, but each teacher and pupil, cooperating with the elementary division superintendent, who In turn is in close touch with the county elementary superintendent, and thus the links are formed between the individual teacher and the state elementary superin tendent, whose work consists In helping the 34 county superintendents by planning for and speaking at conventions and Institutes, organising and strengthening the graded unions, carrying on correspondence and obeying the many calls that come to the office. The past year the elementary superintendent attended eight conventions, one Chautauqua, one conference, nine Institutes, visited 29 Sunday schools, three graded unions and organized one graded union at Salem, gave S3 ad dresses, held 42 conferences and other meetings In the Interest of tha work.
