Turner, Or, July 13. Before the clos
ing of the twenty-second annual Ore
gon Christian Missionary convention
the improvement of the grounds and
the tabernacle was provided for, a com
mittee composed of a' few of the public
spirited citizens of Turner guaranteed
funds for repairs and lighting the
grouada by electricity. All will be In
readiness for the convention next year.
By these arrangements and the assur
ances of comfort and conveniences, the
move of a large number of the mem
bers to have the convention removed
elsewhere was overruled. The city of
Turner was tendered the use of the
tabernacle and grounds for such pur
poses as met with the approval of the
church.
The Turner Memorial Tabernacle is
an Immense' structure, with a seating
capacity. of 3000, and issurrouivded by
a large and beautiful grove, making
camping conditions ideal. A large nunv
ber of cottages is scattered over the
grounds and many more will be erected
the coming summer, and together with
the large number of tent houses in
stalled each year, present a lively city.
The grounds where the tabernacle Is
located were first presented to the
church, which was. In those days, only
a county organization, by Mr. and Mrs.
H. L. Turner, early pioneer settlers and
the first meetings were held In a fir
bough structure.
After tho death of their parents the
children of H. Ij. Turner, namely,
George L-, Mrs. C. A. Davis and Lewis
H. Turner, heirs of the tstate, added
four more acres to the six acres already
owned by the organisation and In 1891
built thereon at their own expense the
present tabernacle, costing JS000, In
memory of their parents. They pre
sented It to the state convention to be
used as a meeting place for the state
gathering.

buque, Iowa. Dr. Dysart opened the
grand lodge session with prayer last
Tuesday.
The Sunday school leaders of Russia
are few In numbers, but courageous and
progressive In spirit. Rev. Oeorg A.
Himon, of St. Petersburg, has invited
the World's Tenth Sunday School con
vention to meet in St Petersburg in
1922. It's a far-away cry, but he wants
the Invitation from Russia to bs In
early.

At a meeting yesterday morning? of
the Portland Presbytery held In the
First Presbyterian church, the resigna
tion of Rev. Martin C Martin, pastor
of Kenllworth Presbyterian church, was
accepted, and his dismissal to the Los
Angeles Presbytery ordered. He will as
sume the pastorate of the Brooklyn
Heights Presbyterian church of 8an
Diego next week. Tomorrow he will
preach his farewell sermon at Kenll
worth. He has been hers two years,
and tn that time practically rebuilt ths
church organisation.
At the same meeting Rev. A. L.
Hutchison of the Bethany Presbytertan
church, Tacoma, and prior to that pas
tor of ths First Church of Seattle, was
received Into the presbytery hers and
arrangements mads for his installation
as pastor of the Third Presbyterian
church, to which he has been called. He
has been filling the pulpit of Third
church for some tlms, and has given
great satisfaction. Formal Installa

week from their second annual outing.
The boys are members of the Knights

of Mr. Snyder. They had ths time of
their lives and wers not at all anxious
to return home.
That their appetites wers hearty Is
shown - by the amount of edibles con
sumed during the camp. Five hams, 40
pounds of bacon, 6j5 loaves of bread," IT
pounds of. crackers, 28 doien eggs, a case
of canned corn, and a caur of canned
salmon disappeared, beside other good
things, including transportation tne sn-"
tlrs cost of the trip was $151, a frao

Assisting Mr. Snyder in carina; for the
boys were Mr. Langs, Mr. Dougherty
and Mr. Lawrence. On the Fourth of
July the boys were Joined by seven wo
men and girls, Mrs. W. C, Baker, Mrs.
A. P. Lange. Mrs. Teo, Mrs. La Tour,
Miss Lange, Miss Yeo and Miss Tetrldgs.
The Fourth of July was a pleasant:
day and the boys Invited the residents
of the neighborhood to Join them In
celebrating the day. All manner of ath
letic sports were staged and patrlotlo
songs and speeches completed tha pro
gram. .
The outing was spent In bathing, fish
ing, tramping and generally enjoying the
outdoor life. Evenings were spent
around a great cam pf ire with story
telling. Mr. Snyder related many of his
experiences In the woods and Mr. Lange
added interesting tales. Oldtlme songf
filled In the happy moments.
On one of the most Interesting
hikes taken- the boys each carried ma
terials for an Individual meal and when
the noon hour arrived each cooked his
own dinner over a campflrs which be
had prepared.
Every moment of the trip waa en
Joyed, even when rain interfered with
the plans. Ths boys carried all their
camping outfits with them and packed
them from ths boat at Caps Horn over
the five-mils trail to their camping
ground.
