THREE REVOLVER BULLETS KILLED C BAY M Daughter of Jacob Evans Says Murderer' Shot Through the Door No Indications of Robbery. (Rprrlal to Tb J roaL) Marnlifleld. Or.. April SO. Poat mor trin examination lipid (hla afternoon proved hyonl a dnuht that Jacob Evans th.- i'uok county pioneer who w aa tufcflnated In hla home at South Slough whh killed by aoft noaed bull eta from a 3:1 calibre revolver. Three bullets hava been taken from the man's chest. They were all from the same tun only one nhot which had penetrated hla In-art was fatal but all wera aimed clone to the heart, and had bean fired through a glass door of the kitchen. ' I feel aure my father wss killed by some one who had planned the act In cold blood." said Mrs. Dora O'Mal ley of this city who Is a daughter of Bvans. "His dog which was always by hlK side was in the house and I am sure that whoever killed him fired through the door because they knew the dog was savage and would attack ttiem If they entered and made trouble. "My father did no! keep any money In the house and I am sure for I lived . with him for quite a while. I waa one of the first to reach the house after he was reported dead and there was noth ing disturbed and no Indications of rob bery." Mrs. O'Malley will not attempt to aay Swho she suspects of the murder. The officials decided not to hold a coroner's Inquest as the grana jury is now. in aesslon and has just disposed .of two other murder cases and whatever evi dence Is gathered will be taken direct to the grand Jury. The case has created a sensation and the officers are following- up every scrap of evidence that may lead to lo cating the murder. Evans was nearly 80 years old but ' was a sturdy man for his age. He had lived In Cooa county probably longer than any other man now alive. 'DE; SERTf ONS INCREASE BRITISH ARMY (By the International New SerVlce.) L-ondon. April 20. Official govern ment reports show that the number of desertions from the British army last year reached the surprising height of 1600 or nearly 400 more than the pre vious year. Though very little is ever said about it (in the press. It Is gen erally known TlBat the recruiting, au thorities find it more and more dlffl- f cult to find the necessary numoer 01 suitable young men for ha army, and that to fill : tha gaps In the ranks all sorts of human derelicts and even' ex convicts are taken, with the result that . the army is not thought ,.by all to bo altogether tellable, at least not for ac tive work. The fact that tha army Is known, to contain a great number of social out casts explains why the British military authorities are exceedingly afraid ol the attempts ofsyndicallsts to Influence the army. These attempts are far more numerous than the public knows, and while they have been rather 'unsuccess ful m the navj, army officers are well 'aware that In nearly every i regiment .v. are aulte a number of crlvate who are not to be entirely trusted. This dumber ! Increasing very rapldtjr, -fact which la. a source of great worry t the military authorities. . . - . - . .J w , Tho Host in Valuo mmmmmmmmmmm mm iii y 1 ia 1,1- 4- CI l ilWl7'(-y.
