ONS INCREASE
BRITISH
ARMY
(By the International New SerVlce.)
L-ondon. April 20. Official govern
ment reports show that the number of
desertions from the British army last
year reached the surprising height of
1600 or nearly 400 more than the pre
vious year. Though very little is ever
said about it (in the press. It Is gen
erally known TlBat the recruiting, au
thorities find it more and more dlffl-
f cult to find the necessary numoer 01
suitable young men for ha army, and
that to fill : tha gaps In the ranks all
sorts of human derelicts and even' ex
convicts are taken, with the result that
. the army is not thought ,.by all to bo
altogether tellable, at least not for ac
tive work.
The fact that tha army Is known, to
contain a great number of social out
casts explains why the British military
authorities are exceedingly afraid ol
the attempts ofsyndicallsts to Influence
the army. These attempts are far more
numerous than the public knows, and
while they have been rather 'unsuccess
ful m the navj, army officers are well
'aware that In nearly every i regiment
.v. are aulte a number of crlvate
who are not to be entirely trusted. This
dumber ! Increasing very rapldtjr,
-fact which la. a source of great worry
t the military authorities.
