I have not held any meetings with the exception of on at Alville, where I attended a grange meeting and made a short talk to tho farmers. I am expecting to hold a meet lng at Jrrigon In the near future. "I have advised with farmers as to the best tillage methods, best varieties and kinds of grains to grow. Also 1 have tried to induce them to grow field neas. alfalfa, corn and lorfimms. I have furged them to build better fences and to Increa&e their stock. "Since April 3, I have called on dozen farmers, around Moro and Grass Valley. I visited Barnum Brothers' ranch where- they are preparing fifteen acres of land for alfalfa .and some corn, sugar beets and Hale." TEN LOSE THEIR LIVES AS AVALANCHE FALLS I Mr te letereaUaael rmt Sarea ) Vienna. April 50 A party of 11 akltra aaa overwhelmed by an ava lanche near the eummlt of tha ftchneo behg. near Vienna, and 1 persona ware killed. Two wood cuttera coming down tha mountain heard groana from be neath the enow. They dug hastily and discovered a lady with clothe, lorn and ao eihauated that there la little hope for her. She gaaped "Avalanche. Dig deeper.- and then fainted. They laid her on the anow. and after much work recovered the corpse of the leader of the party. Dr. Hacker, and I ben conveyed Kranleln Bianka Tag lelcht, who Is the aole aurvlvor, to the hotel. Owing to a heavy anowatorm laat night the relief eipedlOoa waa without reault. but this morning several oetarnmenta or soldiers on akls pro ceeded to the spot. Nine bodlaa. Includ ing one woman, have now been recov ered. It is remarkable that the faces of all the women wear happy expres sions, which would aeem to Indicate I death waa inatantaneoua. I THE COMING CITY ' of the whole COLUMBIA RIVEK tusln MUST eventually be at the MOUTH of thft COLUMBIA the PLACE WHERE RAIL' AND DEEP WATER MEET. . e , The jobbers of the MldJIe West, who have been heavv competitors of Pujcet Soun4 and Portlinj houses In the Inland Empire, must five wav to snme eitent to the ATI-ANTIC manufacturer arU jobber because of the PANAMA CANAL WATER ROUTE. ; - . The ALL WATER ROUTE jrfves the EAST t much less frelf ht rate than the MUJle West can et by rail, consequently our jobbers of this Coast will have i broader business field that will multiply their business, and, of course, this win multiply the tonnage of our 1IARB0RS many times, even-villi -our-PRESENT population. So, when w switch about seven-tenths of our already very heavy rail tonnage to a WATER ROUTE, then try to Imagine what kind of t HARBOR Oregon will NEED In a few shrt years, when our POPULATION has been multiplied about ten times. , It becomes TRULY STARTLING to MANY people of Oregon and the Northwest. ' The treat Oreron Journal recognizes, as (Jo thousands of Individuals of late, that the ONLY SOLU TION of our HARBOR PROBLEM IS to USE the MOUTH OF THE COLUMBIA . . T and do it as SOON as POSSIBLE. This oceanside fresh-water harbor Is the finest In the land and fives all Oreron a rjeat advantage over Washlnrlon In the Panama Canal business, and will make Portland the jobbing center of the Northwest. ' Are YOU ready to fifht for the mouth of the Columbia, or will you let Seattle ret the trade. The Port of Astoria Is preparing plans for the finest fresh-water harbor In the whole country, reichin from Tonrue Point to Fort Stevens. . Definite plans were adopted for Im mediate , marking of Pacific Highway from ttie Oregon-California boundary to the city of Redding near the head of the K.-W-ramento valley at a meeting of tilt pacific Highway executive board in Seattle, April 6. This is only a com paratively short stretch of road, the distance belug considerably less than two hundred miles, but at the present time it is the missing link in Pacific Highway marking and no signs of iany kind direct the tourist 'who may happen to be passing through the country. Some of the worst road on the Pacific High way route is In this northern California ttrctch Kin posting will, be done under the pet-annal direction cf Frank M.
