In attempting this investigation, the
results of which will be given in a sar-
mon within a short time, Dr. Corjiy was
actuated by a desire to discover If pos
sible what men not connected with any
church or not with hll particular church

Untversalist faith In particular. Ex
tracts from many of the answers will
be read and commented on without re
vealing the Identity of the writers.
Many of the suggestions, acoordlng to
Dr. Corby, show deep thought on the
- subject and offer suggestions worthy of
consideration.
Dr. Corby does not Intend to drop
his investigations with this one sermon
but hopes to complete a series by send
ing out the same questions to members
of the medical fraternity, newspaper
men and various other professions. Dr.
Corby Is very enthusiastic over the re
- suits of his first attempt st thus gaug
ing the sentiment of the laymen toward
religious matters.

Makes Good Showing
With an expenditure of over $29,000
for expenses and Denevolences during
the year-of 1911, the treasurer of the
First Congregational church, Thomas
Roberts, reported at the adjourned meet
ing of the church held Thursday night
that all bills had been paid and $157
remained in the treasury as a nest egg
for this year. Of the $20,000, half wu
used in paying the expenses of the
church and the other half went for
benevolent purposes. For the support
of Reverend and Mrs. Kellogg, mission
aries in Foo Chow, China, $1000 Va
spent Other amounts were given for
the support of home missionary work
assisting smaller congregations in
building churches, educating young men
tor the ministry and starting new Sun
day schools.
The church received 81 new members
during the year which gives It a total
or ious memDers. T'ne unnstian En
deavorers reported an Increase of from
67 to 110 members during the. year.
Tha students of the Bible school gave
presents to 70 guests who otherwise
would have had to go without. These
ohildren were collected In automobiles
and brought to the Christmas exercises
where they were made to feel at home
The Women's Missionary society
raised $1000 during the year to aid in
carrying on the work of the women
missionaries. The Toung Women's
Guild maintained a kindergarten during
the hour or aervlces each Bunday morn
Ing which had an average attendance of
20. A trained teacher was employed
to care for the little ones while their
parents enjoyed the sermons. They al
so assisted over 70 needy families with
out regard to religion. The Ladles' Aid
society spent $1800 In improving the
church edifice and paying for the mem
orial window to Dr. Clapp, a former
pastor.

The New Theology
"The New Theology" Is to be the gen
eral theme for a series of Sunday morn
ing sermons at Centenary Methodist
church. East Ninth and Pins street. In
these Rev. Delmer H. Trimble, the pas
tor. Is to present the present day theo
logical viewpoint as related to systems
of immutability, Infallibility and final
ity. This Is the sequel of the con
troversy between Father O'Hara and
Rev. Trimble, arising over the recent
lectures of the former -In tho East Side
library.
The first of the series wfll be given
tomorrow morning. The theme will be
"The Principles of ths Protestant Refor
mation as Represented by Martin Lu
ther." It is ths purpose of Rev. Trimble to
put before his congregation In popular
terms the whole modern position in
theology.

main feature of the program at the
meeting of the Men's club of Grace M. E.
church, Tuesday night. A. W. Hen
dricks, for a number of years in charge
of finances or Chicago, will be the
speaker. Mr. Hendricks Is the presi
dent of the American Safety Powder
company. He has lectured at Harvard
and Columbia universities on the sub
ject. Music and refreshments will com
plete the program.
Ths Standard Bearers of Grace church
will hold their first meeting of ths new
year Wednesday evening.
The young people of the East Side
Baptist church will hold a grand rally
and social, with program and refresh
ments, and election of officers, on Tues
day evening, January 18.
The Grace Montavilla Baptist church
will hold its annual roll call on Thurs
day evening, January 18.
A congregational meeting will bo held
at the First Presbyterian church Thurs
day evening, January 18, to discuss the

Dr. Herbert Yeuell. whose evangelist

churoh, known as the Third Church of
Christ, Scientist, has been established.

evening.
Motion pictures showing the beauties
of the Pacific coast from Spokane and
Seattle to southern California, will be
thrown on th screen at Taylor Street
M. B. church next Wednesday evening
for the benefit of the deaconess work.
The. pictures as , well as many colored
slides will be accompanied by a travel
talk by John P. Clum. Among the pic
tures of greatest Interest will be those
of alligators, ostriches and feeding
100,000 pigeons.
Beginning Sunday evening, January
21. Dr. John H. Boyd will give a series
of four sermons dealing with "What All
the World Is Thinking About," and "The
Relation of Religion to Sickness." One
sermon will be given each Sunday night
for four consecutive Sundays.

The third quarterly rally of Poiland
district Epworth league will be held in
the Woodstock Methodist Episcopal
church next Friday night, beginning at
8 o'clock. Mrs. Lena Sweetland, district
third vice president, will have charge
of the program for the first hour, after
which the Woodstock chapter will fur
nish a social session.
Miss Mary Hepburn, a deaconess, will
give the principal talk of the evening
on the mercy and help work, especially
as to the visitation of the sick and tho
administration of charity. Mrs. Sweet
lar.d will outline the organization of an
ideal mercy and help department for a
local chapter, and tell how the work
can be done In any community.

A nerles of lectures at the University
of Oregon was begun on Thursday
night by Right Rev. Charles Scadding.
There was a large attendance of mem
bers of the faculty and the student
body. The subject was. "The Church,
in Relation to Social Unrest."
Bishop Scadding based bis argument

'Thy Kingdom Come, and asserted
that the common factor of the very
many interpretations of the new testa
ment expression, "Kingdom of God,"
la social, and that while Jesus worked
on Individuals and through Individuals,
his end was social. He did not eome
to this earth to raise certain selected
Individuals Into a kingdom of God
hereafter, but to Inspire men and
women with the desire and motive to
bring the kingdom of God here and
now. The Holy City, the Heavenly Je
rusalem, which some hymns portray In
merely a vision for the future. Is really
a vision for the present.

It Is descended from God out of
heaven to the earth to transform the
earth Into Its own likeness, and, there
fore, the church has a distinct and en
couraging social message.
The bishop elaborated his arguments
by giving many Illustrations of how
the church today is trying to express
her social message, through social set
tlements, and such social., organizations
as Brotherhood of St. Andrews, Girls'
Friedly, municipal leagues, sto.. and

Nimbleness of Mind Is Great Power

One of the powers every one ought to cultivate Is nimbleness of mind;
that Is, the ability to turn quickly from one thing to another.
I recall once sitting In a great lawyer's office, conversing with him.
Some one entered upon an urgent matter. The Interruption lasted fully
10 minutes. When the visitor had gone, the lawyer turned to me and be
gan his talk precisely where he had left off. His mind came back instant
ly and smoothly, with its full force of attention, with the .precision of a
well-oiled machine, to the subject he had left.
I have seen this same remarkable facility in the managing editor of a
certain newspaper, who seemed to equal Julius Caesar in his fabled ability to
dictate several letters at a time. Similar stories are told of Napoleon. Thera
are chess experts wio can carry on a dozen games simultaneously.
But this is nova gift possessed by rare geniuses. It Is a skill that any
ons can cultivate. It does not Imply strength of mind, but readiness,
agility of mind.
To acquire this seeompllshment one must first reallsa the pleasure that
cornea from self control. To master one's emotions Is a finer Joy than to
be mastered by them. To coerce our attention Is more pleasing than simply
to follow where we are most Interested. The very highest satisfaction of
ths normal mind Is that of being in absolute command of Itself.
William James said everybody ought to do two or three things dally
that he does not want to do, to exercise his will.
The most unshakably contented person is ths one who has learned to
do as he chooses by his Intelligence, and not as he is pushed by his desires.
With this end In mind, when there Is a letter to write, write It now;
when there is an unpleasant call to make, make It now; when there Is a dis
agreeable item of business to be attended to, attend to it now.
Do it now, as the motto says on the wall.
Teach your desires to know their place. They are servants. They are
to do as they are ordered, and to be quick about It. A brain that Is run
by ljs desires Is as pitiable and disordered a spectacle as a house that Is run
by Insolent servants. And, believe it, once you have tasted mastery of self,
it Is sweet.
Just for practice, lay down your novel at the most interesting moment.

ceasing the thing that absorbs you, attending sweetly to the demands of the
little one, and going baak again to your affairs.
Just to learn this suppleness of mind, how to pass" promptly from one
Interest to another, would save your nerves how much! The fog and fric
tion of our days would disappear. Life would be more like a fascinating
game and less like an Irritating task.
And we can do It. It is accomplished by", first, realising what you want
to attain, and, second, by practice, patient, dailyw continuous practice. And
It's worth It.

P. Stout, the evangelistic singer who
held very successful meetings at Taylor
Street churoh three years ago, to Dr.
Benjamin Young. Professor Stout states
that Gipsy Smith Is having wonderful
success In San Franolsoo. He says that
on January 7 ths gypsy spoke to over
6000 people, and In commenting on It
says this would mean an audlsnos of 20,
000 for Portland. -
Mr. Stout declares that the present
meetings have been drawing the largest
audiences msetlngs of this nature have
attraoted for ths past quarter of a cen
ttiry. He' believes that ths gypsy Is
doing splendidly in ths Bay City, and
Bays that he has already won hundreds
and will make the number reach thou
sands before he leaves. On New Tear's
night he spoke on repentance, , and
crowds went Into the inquiry room.
Professor Stout has been in charge of
the great choir at the meetings In San
Francisco, and will accompany the'
gypsy to Los Angeles.

which were to have been held at the
Piedmont Presbyterian churoh begin
ning last Sunday evening, but postponed

ings, starting Sunday night. They will
