Pa trolman Hewston fired the shots after he had been wounded and had fallen to the ground. The patrolman's injuries are not con sidered fatal. The shooting took place on a dark corner In South Portland, when the patrolman encountered a suspicious looking man and demanded to know hla business. "What are you doing here at this hour of the night?" asked the police man. Hewston says the man immediately drew a gun, and fired. Hewston had instinctively turned sideways to the man, receiving the bullet In the groin. Shots Are Exchanged. As the policeman fell, he pulled his own revolver and fired as fast as pos sible at the fleeing assailant, who re- J. Frank Kelly. turned the fire, emptying his run at Hewston. Although four bullets struck Kelley, he sped down Hall street to the South ern Pacific narrow gauge depot, where he crawled into a car, where he was ar rested by Captain Keller and several patrolmen.
