v ) , i i HAT ACTIVITIES Most Important Improvement .Planned Is Deep Water Har bor to Be Built Opposite the Town en Slough.- , Activities at Burlington, the recently established town on the United Rail ways and Northern Pacific, IS miles Irom Portland, are. more noticeable tiow than at any time since this promising property was placed upon the market Developments that mean a great deal to this section are actually In process of construction. - The most' lmpbrtant feature of Bur lington Is the establishment of a deep water harbor on the Willamette slough opposite the new town. By authority of a permit recently Issued by, the secre tary of war, the dam at the head of Sauvlea island; which was originally in tended to maintain the channel down the Willamette,, will be removed. Un der the same permit, the owners of the town of Burlington are permitted to dredge the channel from the : present site of this dam. to Burlington, where ample depth of 'water will be provided along the water front of Burlington for hira'of any draft carrying a cargo over the Columbia bar. To Build Sew Bam. Serving the same purpose as the olo dam, the Ruth Trust company is also required , to build a new one below Burlington. This improvement adds three miles of deep water front to the country immediately tributary to' Port land. :'. The plan to establish a depot at Burlington and provide a plank road to the slough, from the end of which a fprry will operate to the island, is hailed with approval by the island farmers. The fact that the United Hallways and Northern Pacifio join at Burlington, where such splendid sea shipping facil ities are provided,, promises much more for the town, which is developed essen tially"' along the lines of . industrial growth. ' The survey for the Northern Pacific switch, which was ordered some time ago, has been completed and it is under stood that the work of buililimg the switch from the main line la the water front will proceed immediately. It Is stated that switches will ;be built from the' north and south ends of Burlington approaching each other along the dock line, giving railroad shipping facilities to every -foot of the three miles' of liar-" bor. Switching facilities will also be provided by the United Railways, which will form sort of a belt,, line for-the other roads .entering Portland and con necting' the Northern Pacific, Astoria & Columbia River, North Bank and United Railways with the Oregon Electric system-,' recently acquired by the Hill In terests.'
