Most Important Improvement
.Planned Is Deep Water Har
bor to Be Built Opposite the
Town en Slough.-
, Activities at Burlington, the recently
established town on the United Rail
ways and Northern Pacific, IS miles
Irom Portland, are. more noticeable tiow
than at any time since this promising
property was placed upon the market
Developments that mean a great deal
to this section are actually In process of
construction. -
The most' lmpbrtant feature of Bur
lington Is the establishment of a deep
water harbor on the Willamette slough
opposite the new town. By authority of
a permit recently Issued by, the secre
tary of war, the dam at the head of
Sauvlea island; which was originally in
tended to maintain the channel down
the Willamette,, will be removed. Un
der the same permit, the owners of the
town of Burlington are permitted to
dredge the channel from the : present
site of this dam. to Burlington, where
ample depth of 'water will be provided
along the water front of Burlington for
hira'of any draft carrying a cargo
over the Columbia bar.
To Build Sew Bam.
Serving the same purpose as the olo
dam, the Ruth Trust company is also
required , to build a new one below
Burlington. This improvement adds
three miles of deep water front to the
country immediately tributary to' Port
land. :'.
Anticipating the maritime facilities
afforded by this improvement, which

of money, the Burlington Lumber com
pany has" already installed a 100,000 feet

rsilnniii i U c -announced t!;t a commodious-depot
would soon bo built at Bur
lington. The plan to establish a depot
at Burlington and provide a plank road
to the slough, from the end of which a
fprry will operate to the island, is hailed
with approval by the island farmers.
Ehows Industrial Growtli.
The fact that the United Hallways
and Northern Pacifio join at Burlington,
where such splendid sea shipping facil
ities are provided,, promises much more
for the town, which is developed essen
tially"' along the lines of . industrial
growth. '
The survey for the Northern Pacific
switch, which was ordered some time
ago, has been completed and it is under
stood that the work of buililimg the
switch from the main line la the water
front will proceed immediately. It Is
stated that switches will ;be built from
the' north and south ends of Burlington
approaching each other along the dock
line, giving railroad shipping facilities
to every -foot of the three miles' of liar-"
bor. Switching facilities will also be
provided by the United Railways, which
will form sort of a belt,, line for-the
other roads .entering Portland and con

Railways with the Oregon Electric system-,'
