Th association decided that It would Insist upon an Immediate hearing of the question by tha Port of Portland, In or der that the whole question could be submitted to th war department at as early a date as possible. During tha course of the discussion Juda-a Munlv paid his compliments to Charlea K. Hen ry, the chief opponent of tha Broadway plan, In which the speaker reviewed the history of the Broadway bridge agita tion. He picked Mr. Henry's opposi tion to the bridge to pieces, saying that Mr. Henry had developed ."tubercular" symptoms since it had been found that a tub under th river would undoubted ly point from th vicinity of Fourth and Oak streets to the vicinity of a tract of land on th east side owned by Mr. Henry. He also pointed out that the opposition represented by - Mr. Henry came from a number of large property- owners along Third street who did not want to see th east side trafflo diverted from that street to any other street by the erection of the Broadway or any other bridge.- - Other speakers showed that ths un derground tubes were used by eastern cities for rapid transit only, and not for teams or pedestrians, so that It was still necessary for the' bridge to ba con structed by private capital for the uae of the railroads, and not by tha cities for th use of the publie generally. Besolntlons Adopted. The resolutions adopted by the" asso ciation were as follows: "Whereas, The preliminary plans for the Broadway bridge have been prepared by Mr. Modjeskl and filed with tha city executive board, and said plana have been submitted by the bridge committee of said executive board to the Port of Portland for approval; "Whereas, The lack of necessary feci!- ltiaa to accommodate the trafflo to and from the east and west sides of the Willamette river makes It Imperative that no time be lost In th construction of said Broadway bridge; "Resolved, That the secretary of th North East Side Improvement associa tion ba Instructed to communicate with the aa!d Port of Portland, urging that body to meet at the earliest possible moment and act upon said plans, ahd that a committee of 10 members from this association be appointed by the chairman to wait upon said Port of Portland and insist upon the Immediate approval of said plans. The net profits on operations . approximate, say, $8,000,000 per annum. If thla continues the public will natur alv ask for a reduction'of express and freight charges.
