A. A. Winter. G. Evart Baker, state superintendent of the Builders' union department, spoke of the work of that department ' Bev. Francis ,B. Clark. D. D LL. D., president of the united society of Chrts tian Endeavor and Of the world' C E. Union,, occupied ' the remainder of . the morning session with an addresa In which he treated of the general work and urged all the) societies to Join In the advance movement which Dr. Clark intends, tp launch at the St. Paul con vention to be held July 7 WJ1. This advance movement will take for Its slo gan "One .million fnembers before 1911." Io-answer to1 questions asked him Dr. Clark said that tha Emmanuel move ment, was doing a 'great deal for hu-manity-in the hands of Dr. Worcester and his associates In Boston, but he thought that -such movements were not under he . province of the young peo ple's societies as the young people must act under -the guidance of their pastor and the older members of the church. Asked concerning the frequent state ment t'aat the Christian Endeavor move ment is ' a spent force. Dr. Clark said that lt was -never so- vigorous as now; that there had been times of discourage ment when It Seemed as though -the work was at low ebb but that the recur rent -flood tide had always' succeeded and lifted the work a bit higher eaoh time. He gave it as his opinion that the work was never stronger and mors vital than at the present time. Several pastors of ttie city met for a noon luncheon at the T. W. C. A. with Dr. Clark. This evening there will be a reception to Dr. Clark at tha First Congregational church," --when Rev. Luther Tt. Dyott, Dr. .Clark and Mayor Lane will make addresses. - Tomorrow morning Dn Clark ftV preach at the First Congregational church; in the evening he will prewch at the Flint Presbyterian church. A mass meeting will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church. Rev. William Hi ram Foulkes presiding, when Dr. Clark will make an address. Blindfolded, she wrote 13S words in a minute. Carrying on a conversation covering her liking for her work and her homesickness for "Broadway," the young woman wrote 13S words in a minute. ' Mies Frits la the champion typist of the world, holding now in bar posses sion three silver cups, two of them being permanently hers, and one, the world's cup, valued at $1000, having been in her possession for two years. She is making her first visit to the Pacific coaat for the purpose of dem onstrating her work. Yesterday she gave demonstrations at the Underwood typewriter offices, Sixth street. She possesses unusual ability In operating the typewriter, and is so perfectly fa miliar with the keys that her fingers fairlv fly. She la able to keep up an average of 100 words a minute during a dav's work. With Miss Frltg Is Miss Marie Thede of 8nn Francisco, who is In charge of the. employment desnrtaient of the Un derwood Typewriter company. The two young women expect to spend 10 days In Portland. ' . ELDER RfHANER IS 4 REELECTED TO OFFICE At the second 43ays session f the Oregon conference of the Evangelical association Rev. Theodore Schauer was elected older for Portland and Rev. II E. The report of the conference treas urer. Q V. Plumber showed receipt during the year of 11234, with a bal ance in the) treasury of $289, assets in note" $653. Other reports showed h good year in all departments. Bishop Speng lectured last evening to a good audience. The business of the confer ence will probably be completed today. SERVICES AT WHITE TE3IPLE TOMORROW The services at the White Temple on Sunday will be appropriate to Memorial day. The decorations, the muslo and tha sermons will be appropriate to the occasion. Dr. Brougher will preach special sermons and will take occasion to express himself on the present polit ical situation in the city. Miss Ethel Shea, the popular contralto singer at tho White Temple. Is to be married June 1 and will alng for the Inst time before leaving for a trip abroad. Two G. A. R. posts will attend the evening service and the veteran nuartet will sing. The services of the entire day will oe or unusual Interest and all veterans of ail wars with their friends are invited to attend. HEROIC OPERATION ON SUICIDE FAILS (United Press Leased Wtre.1 San Francisco, May 29. Dr. Shad worth Beasley today resorted to the most heroic meaaure In tha history of local emergency hospitals in a futile attempt to save the life of John Bower. Bower was found early today suffer ing from the effects of a dose of car bolic acid, supposed to hava been taken with sulcWal intent When Beasley at tempted the usual operation with a stomach pump he found the man's throat too constricted to receive the in strument. In a final effort to save Bower's life the physician made an incision in the wslls of the man's stomach and re moved the acid. Bower died before the unique operation was completed. Bull Tram pi ps Farmer. Forest Grove, Or., May 2$. Robert Alexander, a well known farmer living west of here, was seriously injured by being trampled by a vicious bull lie went to get the bull In a nearby field to bring it to an enclosure. As he ap proached, the anlmaj rushed forward, striking the farmer on the left shoulder and knocking him down. The man fell violently to the ground, causing a- frac tuer of the right thigh bone. The acci dent occurred close to a wire fence through which the man was shoved by the charging beast, or It Is believed he would have oeen killed. Mr. Alexander was found by W..C. Freeman, a neigh bor. Mr. Alexander lost his wife two weeks ago. He is about 45 years old. V. of M. CofnnK'ncement. Oxford. Ml?s.. Nebraska. - A large high pressure area is central over north ern and central California, and a. ridge of high pressure extends from the lake region south to the east Oulf states. The disturbance yesterday over the lower lake region -has advanced to the New England coast. Ught to moderately heavy rains occurred yesterday and last night in the north Pacific and northern Rocky mountain states and good rains have fallen In Minnesota and the Da kota a as well as at scattered places In the New Kngland states. The tempera tures are below normal over the Snake river dTalnage area and slightly above aormal over the greater portion of the upper Columbia river drainage area.
