12 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNALUPORTLAND, FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 21. 190$. W01E'S"M TO MY I OF REWS LIGHT Small Catch and Pack Re ported at Columbia River . Plants for Season. . . today's wholesale markets, Salmon run is disappointing. Tomatoei are very scarce. Chicken market very good. Eggs showing weakness. Votato market Is easier. ' Strawberries holding; high. .Offering 10c for hop contracts. - Salmon. Boa la Very Small. Run of salmon In the Columbia Is - "very small according to Robert S. Far rell of Kverding & Farrell, owners of the Pillar Rock cannery. Mr. Farrell : has Just returned from a trip down the river and says: "While the catch is not good it Is about equal to that of last year although, a better; one was ' expected this season. The oanneries of the lower river are running only about half the time because of their inability to secure sufficient supplied. For in stance a cannery not operating' today will hold Its fish over until tomorrow, The weather la cool enough to do this successfully." J. Pack Smaller Thaa Tear Ago. Pack of salmon along the Columbia i river la from 25 to J81-S per cent . smaller than a year ago. This Is due to the cool weather and to the fact that the season this year did not open until 15 days after Ita usual time. Re ports received, by The Journal this morning from the upper Columbia in dicate no falling off in the catch of blueback salmon there but the run of chinooks is still very disappointing. 8o far as prices are concerned the salmon market stands in a very good " position. With holdover stocks of salmon light lit all centers the new . pack enters the market with a light pack in sight and a liberal demand, while this would seem to indicate a better price for the canned fish, rep . resentatives of the various packers who met this 'week at Astoria decided to : hold to last year's values which are as follows: - . - Per Dos. Pound talis $1.65 Pound flats 1.75 ..Halves ; 1.05 Pound ovals 2.30 An advance of So a dosen over these prices is charged for keyed cans., the printed rigures Deing lor oromary paca ages. Offerlag lOo tt Hop Contracts. Hop dealers are now freely offering lAc a Bound for hop contracts but are not meeting with any success in land ing supplies. The few growers who have not tied up their coming produc lion and have favorable prospects, are looking for higher values and therefore '.will not sign. Herman Klaber of Kla- .'. ber, wolf at Netter company today con firmed the recent damage news In the ' hopyards as printed by The JournaL "'"The yards are suffering from back ward weather, old age and poor culti vation in recent years," he says. "I believe that The Journal's estimate of about 66.004 bales for 1909 is about cor rect although estimates are ranging from 60.000 to 80,000 bales." Chicken Demand Zs Tery Good. ' ": There continues generally a very good demand for chickens and all re cent Arrivals were readily cleaned up at the quoted - printed figures on this page. , Old ducks are hard to move even around 14 and 15c but young ones . are in demand around 20 and 2lMc. Exactly the same condition exists in regard to old geese. The latter are out of season. Ess- market is softer with the top a - S4e and little movement even at that figure. Large lots could not be moved peaaiiy even at sso canaiea. Brief Votes of 'Wholesale Trade. Strawberries are holding hleh with supplies of local stook showing little increase. yuamy is -oeuer, However. California stock is not giving' satlsrac tlon although quality is good for the product of that state. - Potato market is easier with- some dealers offering supples at a reduction of 26c Ripe tomatoes are very scarce and an advance or irom zt to ovo Is noted in Mexican stock here. Butter market contlnuea firm espe cially ror Deuer Known Dranas. No local cheese is offering as yet. Borne expected tomorrow. Local asparagus is In better supply but not enough Is coming to seriously aneci present mgn prices. FLOUR OF LOW E FOR FAST GAD Small Movement From Inte rior Reported Chicago Is Principal Buyer. Several small sized sales of flour have been made by Pacific northwest millers to Chicago and other cities during the past few days and there is a demand for more stock. -Most of the eastern sales have been filled through Interior mills because of the savings in frolKht charge, Spokane securing a majority of the business through Portland connections. Demand for our Hour now coming from the east is principally for the cheaper grades, but It is HKeiy mat some business could be turned in patents could this grade be secured. Ac cording to a prominent milling au thority there is little patent flour re maining; In fact, scarcely enough for home ' consumDtlon. so sales eastward are practically out of the question. There was a very poor showing. of rattle arrivals In the yards today, but this had no effect whatever upon prices or demand. The heavy purchases of leading killers at canrornia points aur ing recent days has stilled the demand In the yards to a considerable extent and it is doubtful if present values could be maintained were the arrivals to show any material Increase. With the wants of the big killers sat isfied so 'far as the near future is con corned, the prospect for high cattle prlees Is not exceedingly bright. How ever, considering this state of affairs, the present standing of the cattle mar ket here is wonderful. Of the cattle now coming forward Into the local yards few are shown from Paclflo northwest points. Practically all of the recent arrivals In that line nave been from the south. News of the de cision favorable to Western Union in Its $6,000,000 suit against the American Telephone & Telegraph company caused a stampede of buyer In that security and sent Western Union shares up to 78 or t polnta above the closing yesterday. The advance was lost later In the day when the price reverted. to 76. Rumor was persistent In placing United States Steel common on a 4 per cent basis within the coming six months and this was an aid to all metal shares although Smelter closed a fraction lower. Northern Pacific shares had a spell of activity that sent the price 1 Vi points above the close of yesterday and Great Northern preferred participated In the advance to the extent of . point. While Harrlman shares were active there was a tinge of weakness in both Southern Pacific and Union Pacific after a higher opening. Southern closed H aud l nion point above yesterday. The chtnra of heart of sentiment the former bear leader has caused much comment among the speculative and milling trade.
