Flnley, president of the Oregon Audubon society, who went, east two months ago to attend the annual meeting- of the ' National Audubon so cieties In flew York, returned vto Port land last night. .After the New York meeting Mr. Flnley delivered a number of lectures In the -larger cities of New Jersey, Michigan and North Dakota, where contests are on : for the enact ment of more stringent laws for the protection of wild birds. Mr. Flnley also lectured before the Audubon socie ties In many of the larger eastern cit ies, including Cincinnati, Chicago, De troit, Indianapolis, St. Paul and Minne apolis. Mr. Flnley is especially interested in the fight being made In Minnesota, and North Dakota to stop spring shooting of "tlucks, and spent several days in those states consulting with ths leaders of the movement to secure better laws for the protection of wild gams and birds. While In Washington, Mr. Flnley called upon President Roosevelt, who complimented him on tho work being done in Oregon for the protection of wild birds. The" president also told Mr. Flnley that "American Birds," Mr. Fin ley's book, was the best - thing that he had ever read on the subject of western bird life. While in Washington the president asked Mr. Flnley to visit Kermit Roose velt at Harvard college, and advise with htm on the subject of .proper camera equipment for the proposed hunting ex pedition of the president in Africa, Mr. F'nley complied with the request and while at Cambridge lectured before the American Society of Ornithologists. "The state Audubon societies are car rying on a Vigorous campaign for the better protection of wild 'game," said' Mr. Flnley. "The national society has an endowment of 1300,000 and is spend ing, many thousands of dollars annually for the protection of wild birds. Ac cording to the report of the secretary of the national association, we employed 90 special wardens last year to look after the wild reservations in different parts of the country. Up to date the president has sit aside 25 reservations for wild birds, the two largest and most Important are Ijikes Malheur and' Klamath, in southeast Oregon. "I found a great j awakening among j the eastern people rot the better pro tection of wild game, and. especially wild birds, and I am confident that withtn a few years every state in the Union will nave more stringent laws on the statute books for the protection of game and birds during the breeding season.
