The Lakme la an old timer !n these waters having been eneasred In the lumber trade on various occasions. For a while she ran resrularly between Port , land and Gravs' Harbor' points but the line was abandoned and she was again turned Into a f lumber droaher. She carries about GOfl.Oft') feet. The flaeinaw Is a large ersft, with capacity for about ouu.ouu leet or nimoer. In a very remarkable wav the threat ening letters have been traced to one A, Jamie- young -man, a young fellow, Innocent enough In his appearance, who is the driver on a grocery delivery wagon William Pollard. Pollard claims that he wanted to see how his letters ap peared in print and - seemed tgreatly cnagrmea ana surprised to rind he bad committed a crime against ths law and decency. . It la thought his letters are the re sult of his having read detective stor ies. The letters were addressed to Chief unippy, one or two clergymen and pri vate citizens, in - each case demanding a large sum of money and threatening a. uiuw-up djt a oumo. Forecaster Beats is sending fori special reports, fearing that it might be well to issue storm warnings along ths coast this evening. The Rose City left Astoria Saturday and judging from the report this morn ing had to buck the strong wind all the way; The Harriman liner Senator reached Astoria early this morning, having been pushed along by the strong breeze that la delaying the Rose Citv, The Senator will be at Ainsworth deck at o'clock, this evening. , ' W' I, . Plans are un der way for the reconstruction of near ly 10.000 feet of seawall to fit it for resisting the action of the bay tides that are threatening destruction to the northern end of 1 the . present structure.
