'Ths fleet -of ateam schooners engaged
to carry lumber from thJs port and
points on tho Columbia, river was aug
mented this morning' by the charter of
the Lakme and Baelnaw. both to load
at the mills of the Portland Lumber
company for Ban Francisco.
The Lakme la an old timer !n these
waters having been eneasred In the
lumber trade on various occasions. For
a while she ran resrularly between Port
, land and Gravs' Harbor' points but the
line was abandoned and she was again
turned Into a f lumber droaher. She
carries about GOfl.Oft') feet. The flaeinaw
Is a large ersft, with capacity for about
ouu.ouu leet or nimoer.
Other steam schooners booked to come

' According to a telegram received by
T. P. Baumgartner from the E. J. Dodge
company, owners, the cargo will be. dis
charged at Couch street dock. . It had
been reported that henceforth the steam'

gram to Mr. Baumgartner states that

it is taken as a natural consequence
that the freight will be discharged at

reported off the mouth of the Columbia
river this morning Inward bound in bal
last from Sac Francisco under charter
to load lurater for San Pedro. She

cifle Lumber company. Tha Endeavor
is the first sailing schooner to enter
.the coastwise trade for several months.

for soma time is the solution of tho
so-called "White Hand" troubles. While
no little ' worry and excitement have
been . caused, by the many threatening
letters demanding money of orominent
peopie,vas far as known no attempt has
been mads to carry out tho threats. The
letters sre always couched in the moat
grewsoms symbols, with ths ever pres
ent skull, crossbones, coffin handle and

In a very remarkable wav the threat
ening letters have been traced to one

young -man, a young fellow, Innocent
enough In his appearance, who is the
driver on a grocery delivery wagon
William Pollard. Pollard claims that
he wanted to see how his letters ap
peared in print and - seemed tgreatly
cnagrmea ana surprised to rind he bad
committed a crime against ths law and
decency. .
It la thought his letters are the re
sult of his having read detective stor
ies. The letters were addressed to Chief
unippy, one or two clergymen and pri
vate citizens, in - each case demanding
a large sum of money and threatening
a. uiuw-up djt a oumo.
Forecaster Beats is sending fori special
reports, fearing that it might be well
to issue storm warnings along ths coast
this evening.
The Rose City left Astoria Saturday
and judging from the report this morn
ing had to buck the strong wind all
the way; The Harriman liner Senator
reached Astoria early this morning,
having been pushed along by the strong
breeze that la delaying the Rose Citv,
The Senator will be at Ainsworth deck
at o'clock, this evening. ,

SEA WALL PROBLEM

der way for the reconstruction of near
ly 10.000 feet of seawall to fit it for
resisting the action of the bay tides
that are threatening destruction to the
northern end of 1 the . present structure.
Ths wall extending along tha waterfront
from Mission street to Jones street bas
been pronounced faulty by Assistant
State Engineer Barker and the harbor
commissioners are considering the cost
of the proposed repair.
- The only portion of the wall that Is

ferry building, which, on account of Its
modern construction. Is safe. Other
places in tha wall, however, are in a
bad way and the foundations of ware
