AH the way from Dublin the French oar Armen arrived in tne Columbia river yesterday afternoon under char ter to load wheat at this port for a re turn cargo. Coming here the vessel took the longest possible route,, going by way of Cape of Good Hope, through the : Indian ocean and then up the Pacific, In the meantime touching at Hobart, Tasmania, to replenish tbe stores. - This long route is followed by the French to earn the mileage- bounty which it Is figured Is sufficient to give the vessel a small profit even though she does not carry a pound of cargo. It is estimated that the Armen on her way from Ireland covered at least 15,008 nines more man necessary tn order to get as large a slice of the bounty ap propriation aa possible. The bark left Dublin July II ' and reached Hobart October 7. It took five days to prepare for the home stretch and on October 12 the windjammer was again under sail. The run across tha Pacific was ordinarily fast the aver age time being about ten weeks. The Armen Is under charter to the Portland Flouring Mills company and will be brought to Portland at once to begin receiving cargo. She is the sec ond windjammer to arrive here In ballasr during the past few- days under charter to the Portland Flouring Mills company, tbe other being the French bark Sully, which arrived here Decem ber 8, also from Hobart, where she stopped on her way out from Liverpool.
