A pleasant reception and banquet waa tendered the bishop by the Men is Meth odist Social union and the Methodist -Ministerial association. A large gather Ins greeted the bishop and his daugh ter in tne auaixonum ui n " " -IO At the conclusion of the reception the banquet waa served in the parlorij of the church down stairs by the Ladles Aid society of Grace church. A. F. Flegel served as toaatmaster and Introduced the speakers. Be cause of having to leave . for an executive meeting. Mayor Xaue welcomed the bishop before the banquet had begun. He spoke In a happy vein for a short time, declaring that Port land was one of the cities In the coun try where the people love and obey the Jaw In spite of the little diversion at the East Side bank. Rev. C. E. Cllne wel comed the bishop in behalf of the Meth odist Ministerial union. K. B. .Piper spoke In behalf of the press. Mr, Flegel spoke for the social union of the Meth odist church. In the absence of Rev. H. H. Marvin of Seattle. Rev. B. F. Brooks of Vancouver -spoke for the Methodist church of Washington. Dr. Luther R. Dyott welcomed the bishop in the name of the Portland Minis terial association. . . ... Bishop Smith replied briefly to the various welcoming addresses. While the banquet was in progress delightful music was rendered by a harp and mandolin quartet. Miss Alice Juston sang "On the Shore," by Neid linger, and responded to an encore with "Just Her Way," by George Altken. George H. Street sang the "Bedouin Love Song" by Chadwick. United States department of agriculture, has been selected to judge the exhibits at the state dairy as sociation convention which will be held in Salem Thursday and Friday of next week. According to information re ceived at the Portland commercial club from the Salem board of trade the ex hibits are beginning to arrive and many acceptances are received dally through out the northwest There will be a re ception to the delegates by the board of trade of Salem Thursday evening.
