an executive meeting. Mayor Xaue
welcomed the bishop before the banquet
had begun. He spoke In a happy vein
for a short time, declaring that Port
land was one of the cities In the coun
try where the people love and obey the
Jaw In spite of the little diversion at the
East Side bank. Rev. C. E. Cllne wel
comed the bishop in behalf of the Meth
odist Ministerial union. K. B. .Piper
spoke In behalf of the press. Mr, Flegel
spoke for the social union of the Meth
odist church. In the absence of Rev.
H. H. Marvin of Seattle. Rev. B. F.
Brooks of Vancouver -spoke for the
Methodist church of Washington. Dr.
Luther R. Dyott welcomed the bishop
in the name of the Portland Minis
terial association. . . ...
Bishop Smith replied briefly to the
various welcoming addresses. He said
that he rejoiced in the fraternal feeling
shown, and that during his labor here
lie would wish for the cooperation of all

While the banquet was in progress
delightful music was rendered by a
harp and mandolin quartet. Miss Alice
Juston sang "On the Shore," by Neid
linger, and responded to an encore with
"Just Her Way," by George Altken.
George H. Street sang the "Bedouin
Love Song" by Chadwick.
Tomorrow (Thursday) positively the
last day for discount west side gas bills.

Twelve of the new pay-as-you-nter"

Twelve cars will be put on the Twenty
third street line and four on the east
side branch.
This announcement was made by T.
I. Fuller, vice president and general
manager of the Portland Railway, Light
& Power company this morning. Eight
of the new style cars now being equlpea
with collection boxes and motors are
to be nut on the Willamette Heights
line some time during uie momn. mesa
cars start from the, depot.
The - following Instructions for the
benefit of patrons of the pay-as-you-enter
cars have been issued by the
company:
"If passengers have not the exact
fare, conductors will furnish change,
returning the full amount to the pas
senger, who will then deposit the exact
fare in the box.
"Passengers desiring transfers must
obtain them from the conductor at the
time fare, is paid.
"Electrio signal push buttons are lo
cated on the posts between windows;
press button as a signal for car to
stop."
MITCHELL TO JUDGE
DAIRY EXHIBITS
C L. Mitchell of the bureau of ani
mal industry. United States department
of agriculture, has been selected to
judge the exhibits at the state dairy as
sociation convention which will be held
in Salem Thursday and Friday of next
week. According to information re
ceived at the Portland commercial club
from the Salem board of trade the ex
hibits are beginning to arrive and many
acceptances are received dally through
out the northwest There will be a re
ception to the delegates by the board of
trade of Salem Thursday evening.
Japanese Form a Fuel Company.
Rlye Hasegawa, Masahlckl Hachiya
and Salcht Kigakawa are going to do
business on the American plan and have
filed articles of incorporation of the
Yaraato Wood & Coal company with the
county clerk. The capital stock Is $10,
000. ,
The Cone Manufacturing 'company has
been Incorporated by F. B. 1 Thompson,
Edwin E. Thomas, Ralph R. Cone and
Anna A. Hamacher, the capital stock
being fixed at $86,000. , -
J. S. Michael, K. A. Clem and Henry
R. Moy have filed articles of the South
Portland Crushed Rock companyww The
capital stock is $5000. ' ,

proprietor of the New England hotel
at Oregon City, - left home last Tuesday-
or Wednesday, taking with her
their six-year-old child, and - $260
claimed by. the husband. It is believed
that the woman is headed for Canada
and In order to effect her capture" Car
lisle reported the matter : to ' Chief
Gritsmacher -today and - asked tHat
steps be at once taken, to apprehend his
wife and return her to this state. Car
lisle claims that the money 'taken by
his wlfs was all he bad and is very
