"Ranch 10" The seat sale for the Nordlca con cert will open tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at the HelUg box ce, and It Is more than uafe to predict that a hrtktnar line will be Cllrled In and about the Hellie lobby awaiting chance to buy seats for one of the mc chance to buy seats for one of the most popular prima donnas In the history of opera and concert work. Nordlca is a favorite 'everywhere, but especially lh Portland where sne na enueareu herself to everyone by her splendid work during the Rose Festival last June. Then, having no jewels with her as she was traveling not for con certs but for her personal pleasure, she wore a simple garland of June roBes, but this time she will appear with many of her world famous collection of gems. 8he wears the gorgeous collar of dia monds given her as the "Queen of Song" by the box holders at the Metro politan three years ago, and also wears strings and ropes of priceless pearls. The concert at which Nordlca Hnd her company will appear next Thursday evening is at the Helllg tinder the direction of Lois Steers "W'ynn Coman, and the sale of seats opens tomorrow morning Mrs. Marion Wards Fan; ham, the noted impersonator and elocutionist, will give a dramatic recital, under the aus pices of the Ladles' Aid society, at the White Temple tomorrow night. Mrs. . Earnham has a wonderfully pleasing voice, finely modulated and Is an elo cutionist of rare ability. She Is free from the rant and ultra-elocutionlsm that so frequently detracts from gpoJ reading. She will be assisted by Mrs. Blanch Irbe Koefed, the talented so prano soloist, and by the White Temple quartet, composed of Miss Kathleen Ijiwler, soprano. Miss Ethel Shea, con tralto, J. W. Belcher, tenor, and K. Milton Runvan, baritone. Miss Nellie Kennedy will be the accompanist. Tho entertainment promises to be a most enjovable affair. The Spanish war veterans will meet tonight at the Armory to rehearse for their forthcoming minstrel show, which will, be given at the Jleillg theatre. De cember 18 and 19. The performances w ill be the result of a month s hard work and will no doubt surpass aiiSf thing of its kind giver in the past. The minstrel show should not only attract good audiences on Its merits as an en tertainment but also for the reason that the proceeds go to the relief and sick fund of the Spanish war veterans of the city. The advance sale of tickets will open Friday next at Powers & Estes drug store, at 10 o'clock. The county Institute of the W. C. T. U. will open for a two day session tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock In the TiM rmt 1 n itori Hreihran church at Eafct Fifteenth and Morrison streets. At the Tuesday evening session Mrs. L. H. The funeral will be held from the farnilv home this afternoon at 1 :;-ti ami all friends are invited. All Multnomah county granges are opposed to the plan of uniting the control of the Oregon Agricultural col lege and the university of Oregon under a oingh" board of regents, according to a canvass made by Mrs. M. M. Eaton, secretary of Pomona grange. She di rected this Inquiry by instruction of the Pomona grange, and alt the replies agree In the opinion that the Interests of the two schools require separate management. Dr. William Hiram Frulkes. pastor of the First Presbyterian church, lias been forced to take a few weeks' vacation owing to continued ill health. Dr. Foulkes has kept at his post for some tlmo past, . hoping that he would get better but has at last been forced to five up and take a much needed rest. r. McKay, dean of Whitworth college, preached both sermons yesterday In the absence of Dr. Foulkes-. Photographs and material descriptive of Portland wore forwarded to General Passenger Agent Lomax of the Union Pacific this morning by the passenger department of the Harriman lines here and will be used In getting out a special folder for the National Baptist conven tion which meets here next June. The folders will be distributed throughout the east and will be an excellent ad vertisement for the city. The South Mount Tabor Improvement club has started a movement to have the Hawthorne avenue carllne extended about two miles out the Section Llru road. The line now ends at West ave cnue and the Section Line road, and those living along the county road feel that they would be greatly benefited by tho change. If the Improvement Is made the road will probably be widened to 80 feet. W. R. Wilson, a switchman employed hv the O. R. & N.. Is at St. Vincent's hospital recovering from a bad fall received Sunday morning In the Albina carshops. Wilson, who lives at 30S Fifth street, jumped from a moving traln but lost his balance and was thrown violently to the ground. His back was badly Injured. J. Z. Barnrard and O. M. Lawrence was charged with attempted If you could visit the factory in which Ivory Soap is made; If you could examine the materials which enter into its manufac ture; You would know, as its makers know, that Ivory Soap is the purest soap that money will buy ; and you would use it in preference to any and all other kinds. Ivory Soap 99 Per Cent. Pure. 1 EXTRAVACAHZA AT THE BAKER Knox , Wilson is , with the "Land of Nod" srain this- vear. To those who know that Is quite sufficient. To those who don't let it be said that with Mr, Wilson the entertaining extravagansa Is one of the best of its kind. Wasn't It Mr. Rork who presented "Coming ! Thro' the Rye" at the HelHg a month or j so ago, to say nothing of seasons past i but scarcely forgotten? If "Coming j rnro' tne ttye was worm even uunamg about, "The Land of Nod" la worth go ing to see twice. . That there were many who had re membered the show from last year was evidenced by the big house the Baker had last night. The press agent had been jexeessively busy, too, even going to tne extent of ruing a suit in a real . court. But it was almost worth his i efforts. The April Fool was funny, j The Welsh Rarebit was funny. The i Chorus Girl was funny. They were nearly all funny and you forgave them j for not being able to sing because they were merciful and didn't try it on you I very often. I "The Land of Nod" tells about a lit- f tie girl who goes to sleep and wakes up', in fairy land in that particular being ; just llKe every otner extravaganxa ever written. When she wakes up she finds herself near the palace of the King of Hearts. And things begin to happen, greatly to her delight and to ours. The telephone man conies In and rings a bell. The weather man makes himself as obnoxious as weather men usually do. The Chorus Girl flirts in and out. The Jack of Hearts, a lovely person with a soprano voice and blonde hair carols about her lost heart; the Welsh Rarebit jumps out of the chafing dish and Into the firing line of the king's hunger: and all the time Bonnie, the lit tle girl who went to sleep. Is having most delicious spasms of amazement. There are some reasonably good dances for those who like them, there are some songs In the regular Joe Howard style, there are jokes for the simple-minded and epigrams for the worldly wise. There seem to be no reason why "The Land of Nod" should not have a good week of it at the Baker. It deserves it because it gives value re ceived. criminal assault and was sentenced to the maximum penalty of five years, but after serving two yearn was paroled. He broke his parole almost immediately and had been missing IS months when he was arrested In Portland on a charge of vagrancy. The police are on the lookout for two youthful runaways who left the Chemawa Indian school near Salem yes terday. As soon as the boys were found to be missing the superintendent notified the local authorities, giving their names as William Woodley and Ray Johnson, aged 17 and 14 respect ively.
