Mails - Packages of Aprons and Letters With Money Ar rive by Basketful: ' . A fraud order against ' the Pacific Apron company and C K. Von Nelda of Portland has been Issued by the postofflce i department officials 'at Washington. " - . ; ;- . ' -This means that the hundreds of let ters which have been pouring into the Portland postofflce addressed to the apron company with offices In the Mar quam building- will be held up by the department pending the outcome of the case. "Von Nelda was arrested By fed eral authorities several days ago on a charge of using the mails to defraud. Advertisements of the Pacific-Apron company offering to pay women S3. 60 a dozen for making aprons have been appearing in so many newspapers ail over the country, the contracts for which are still standing in many in stances, to such an extent that letters for the company will continue to pour Into the Portland office for weeks Ho come. Many of these letters contain money. ' What Fraud Order Will Do. " The Issuance of the fraud order against the apron eompany and Us pro- moter, Von Nelda, means in addition to holding up all mall that money or ders made out In his favor will not be recognised by the department. This action of the department in Is . suing the fraud order was taken after a thorough investigation of Von Nelda's scheme ty Postal Inspectors E. C. Clement and O. C Riches, who have been working on the case several weeks. Postmaster Mlnto also made a recommendation that the general , de- f art men t officials forbid the use of he mails to the company and the man who was at Its head. As a result of the order the money which has been sent to the company from women in all parts of the coun try will be returned eventually to the senders. The mall will be held, how ever, pending the outcome of the case in tne eveni mat von eia ooea not plead guilty to the charge of using the malls to aeiraua. goores of Letters Arrive. He was iden tified at the time by Fred C. Cook of Portland, a friend wno la in the build ing material business. Mall has been coming In to such an extent that the postofflce employes have found It necessary to use bushel baskets to deposit the letters and small packages,. . The packages are ... aprons sent on approval for the tl which the applicant for work had to Bend in ad vance. " In addition to Cuk several other Tortlanders have come to the front in Von Nelda's behalf. John Manning, xormer aistrici attorney, nas Deen en gaged as counsel for the "apron man ufacturer, jar. Manning says ne was engaged by relatives of Von Nelda. Von Nelda s father was former ores! dent of the Red River Valley National bank at Fargo, N. TAKES 11 DRINK; Miles Carter of Grants Pass May Be Mortally Wounded. ' (SpeclM Dispatch to The Journal. I Grants Pass, Or., Dec. 6. Miles Carter was shot, perhaps fatally, by William Mack, In the barroom of the Lay ton hotel at 9 o'clock last night. The bullet entered over the heart Car ter's condition is precarious this morn ing. Mack, who Is a stranger here, is said to have been intoxicated. He bad been flourishing a revolver around all evening, threatening various persons. He entered the Lay ton barroom and called for a beer. Carter, the bartender, served him a "temperance beer." Mack .drank it, but refused to pay. Carter ordered him out Mack refused to go. .Carter attempted to put him out by force. Mack pulled a revolver and fired and then ran down the street giving 'himself up to the sheriff. Though Grants Pass is supposed to .be a temperance town, it was evident' that Mack had secured liquor, when he attempted to kill Carter. Miles Carter waa Indicted this past fall for selling Intoxicating liquors, but left for Cali fornia before a warrant waa Issued. The Indictment Is now hanging over him and he is expected to stand trial at the . next term of court EXPERT STUDIES BOAS' LETTER OMe-ssnsSSSM-BeBMseSStM -"'-- -V Theory That He Wrote Let- ter to Himself Thus Investigated.
