f HE OREGON DAILY, JOURNAL. PORTLAND, MONDAY EVENING. NOVEMBER 9, 1908. CHRISTIAN'S BE FULL Dr. Oliver Van Oradal. D D., of Mc mlnnvllle, wai the speaker thla morning at the meeting of the BapUet minister and gave a atratght talk to the pastors. He fold what u necessary t make the church fill lte rightful "province and aid that most churches through tne fault of the ministers do not bring the practical help they should -to trie, peo pie. He lamented the presence of so manv dead weignvs n " """"'i are there merely aa members and who do nothing for th church advancement nr? Van Orsdal spoke ln friendly term of the Christian - Bcienusis. "There are some of the teachings of Mrs. Eddy that are, of course, perfectly ridiculous, but we may well take many lessons from the Christian Scientists. We could then go out and show that we have bo much more to give than Christ, lan Science that the latter wouldn't be In it. Tne liramanum movement du been much discussed among you re; eently. There is much good in it and it Is worth while for us to be concerned about these practical things as long as people have to be fed and clothed and "-heated." ' - v , i He continued with a strong plea for the sunshiny life, and gave examples of people whom he knew who lived irr con stant dread and terror of death. I have been surprised at funerals 1 have conducted In Christian homes,"- he said, "to find that the people conduct 'them selves like heathens, as If they knew no God or no promise of the, future life. They should be Instructed to see these things In a different light. A wo man -I knew In Spokane lived In con. stant dread lest her children should die, and made herself absolutely miserable. Finally the Christian Scientists got hold of her, but then I did too, and I showed her what the Christian life offered. Now she has overcome her dread en tirely. , Strength of Chore. "The strength of the church, he said, "can be estimated by the attendance at the prayer meeting, the Sunday schools Miss Edison Is Like Her Papa Miss Madeline Edison, Miss Madeline Edison, just turned 11, both winsome and Intellectual, is fol lowing the inventive footsteps of Thom as A. An enthusiastic autolst, she has been a familiar, figure in her big 45-horse power Hotchklss speeding along the smooth roads about the Oranges. This toad map like the compass of a ship, goes on the steering column in a dust and rain proof case, and is lighted by electricity at night. I- When a car Is speeding along the road laid out In the tour being taken a cyclometer attachment records the miles, and a tiny black steel bar .Indi cates the location of the car at the time. Miss Edison was graduated last year from Bryn Mawr college. There she un derwent a thorough course In electric ity, chemistry and the applied sciences. She was noted in college for her intel lectual powers and took high honors in chemistry. Throughout her course she received the aid of her father, with whom she has always been a favorite. Of a quiet and studious disposition,: she has been much with her father In his experiments at Llewellyn park, In Orange.
