NEVADA RnNINO STOCKS. By Hyman H. Cohen. Portland Union Stockyaxda Sent. 18. This waa a week that did not show op tha livestock industry of the Paclflo northwest In a very good light. Most of the stock that arrived was of very poor quality In fact so much so mat Duvers aia not care to ao business. It has ceaaed to be a question of getting a iavoraoie price ior gooa stuir, nut. where can good quality be secured at nv price. No longer do livestock shippers say they cannot find a market for good quality that will pay them for produc ing it. tne records or the livestock market during the past few weeks clearly showing thati killers are more than willing to nay a good premium for quality. Tha Paclfio northwest Is full of skin ny or half-fat livestock despite the fact that stock can Da more easily rattened and at less expense here than in any other part of the country. In the local yards of late it has been the exception instead of the rule, for first class stock to arrive, and packers are wondering whether they will be compeled to send to tha east to secure fattened cattle or sheep. It is a certainty that finished stock cannot be seoured In the Pacific northwest for packers and killers have been shouting themselves hoarse for weeka In order to attract tne attention of those who may have this quality to dispose of. For several years the big Backers of the Paclflo coast have been compelled to send to the east In order to aupply their needs of well-finished hogs. In stead of the high prices here being an incentive for atockraen to bring out larger supplies of fattened hogs, there is practically no chance In the arri vals here aa com Dared with the same periods in recent years. This, too. de spite the fact that the population of the three states has doubled within the same period and -consequently tha de mand for hogs and hog products Is thereby much increased. Stubble-Fed HofS Wont Do. Turnine: tha hogs into a stubble field and allowlnv them to shift for them selves to get half fat or starve, is about the w&v that moat of the raisers do; from tha appearance or lata arrivals here. There seemed to ba no attempt at fattening them although the prof its from fattenlne- hoaa at the present price (and real fat stuff would prob ably bring more) even though grain prices ara weu up in Tne air. inn much has been proven time and again by the Oregon Agricultural college and Dy private producers. 76 ToUl sales. t7.600 aha res.
