Oood Outlook for Turkeys.
While the financial situation is some
what of a factor there will in all prob
ability be a very good market for
"turkeys all over the Pacific coast. The
fact tHnt the aovernment has pur
chased upward of 6.000 birds to feed
the soldiers In the Islands means that
much of a decrease in supplies here,
for practically the full order will be
filled In the Willamette valley. It Is
yet rather early for turkey shipments,

NEVADA RnNINO STOCKS.
By Hyman H. Cohen.
Portland Union Stockyaxda Sent. 18.
This waa a week that did not show
op tha livestock industry of the Paclflo
northwest In a very good light.
Most of the stock that arrived was of
very poor quality In fact so much so
mat Duvers aia not care to ao business.
It has ceaaed to be a question of getting
a iavoraoie price ior gooa stuir, nut.
where can good quality be secured at
nv price.
No longer do livestock shippers say
they cannot find a market for good
quality that will pay them for produc
ing it. tne records or the livestock
market during the past few weeks
clearly showing thati killers are more
than willing to nay a good premium for
quality.
Tha Paclfio northwest Is full of skin
ny or half-fat livestock despite the fact
that stock can Da more easily rattened
and at less expense here than in any
other part of the country. In the local
yards of late it has been the exception
instead of the rule, for first class stock
to arrive, and packers are wondering
whether they will be compeled to send
to tha east to secure fattened cattle or
sheep. It is a certainty that finished
stock cannot be seoured In the Pacific
northwest for packers and killers have
been shouting themselves hoarse for
weeka In order to attract tne attention
of those who may have this quality to
dispose of.
For several years the big Backers of
the Paclflo coast have been compelled
to send to the east In order to aupply
their needs of well-finished hogs. In
stead of the high prices here being an
incentive for atockraen to bring out
larger supplies of fattened hogs, there
is practically no chance In the arri
vals here aa com Dared with the same
periods in recent years. This, too. de
spite the fact that the population of the
three states has doubled within the
same period and -consequently tha de
mand for hogs and hog products Is
thereby much increased.
Stubble-Fed HofS Wont Do.
Turnine: tha hogs into a stubble field
and allowlnv them to shift for them
selves to get half fat or starve, is
about the w&v that moat of the raisers
do; from tha appearance or lata arrivals
here. There seemed to ba no attempt
at fattening them although the prof
its from fattenlne- hoaa at the present
price (and real fat stuff would prob
ably bring more) even though grain
prices ara weu up in Tne air. inn
much has been proven time and again
by the Oregon Agricultural college and
Dy private producers.

Aeoordino- to a nromlnent buyer of
nogs, the killers are compelled to sena
to the east every year for at least three
quarters of their provision paeic simpiy
because farmers of the Pacific north
west will not go into the hog-raising
business. All tnis money goes away
from the state every yeai never to re
turn but every cent of it could be
kept here If the hogs could ba had.
There are a few feedera of eattle In
the Pacific northwest who ara making
the slightest complaint over the prices
they receive for their stock. There are
very few of them, however. Bo few
real s-ond feedera ara located in the
northwest that sometimes the killers
themselves are forced to buy feed stock j
ana finlsn it necause producers win
not do it. There is an urgent aemana
now on for fat cattle but the supply is
scant and competition so keen that
prices are bid nigner.
Tjivsstoek During the Weak.
It was the same old story in the live
stock market here during the past week.
There was a demand in all lines for
finished quality but there was but lit
tle of thla stock offered. Those who
did bring fat hogs, cattle or sheep to
marKet, received aaequaie returns, wnn
miirlt aale. but shlDimrs of poor Quality
are loud in their complaints because of
the slow sale ana slower price.
At the present time Portland is one
of the best livestock markets In the
country and win be man Detrer as soon
afl producers learn that It pays to
ship best quality to market Poor stuff
should be kept at home and fattened.
There are four regular livestock com
mission firms nere at tnis time ana
everv one of them Is anxious that pro
ducers learn that tt does not pay to
ship orr-grade stock, rne nrms repre
sented are: Benson & Gould, J. C.

The visit of E. Clement Herat to thla

the trade, becauae Mr. Horst la consid
