Schade, East Sixth and Hassalo Street By O. M. Plummer, Secretary Portland ; Vnion Stockyards,' Ins Chamber of Comarca Bulletin. i Tha present atockyard data from 188, when Mr. Rathburn and "CoL" C P. Hall operated a few pens, about three In number. Shortly afterward tha jard covered an acre. -1 Burke took over the yards In about 1881,' and operated them until 187, at which time they covered two acres. Mr. Burke sold hi Interest the beginning if 1897 and for the past 12 year they have been under practically the earns management, and at this time cover about three acres. ' The ground , on which the yards are now located was sold in 1906 to the North Bank road, which necessitated their removal, and later the same year to acre were secured adjoinglng the pack ing house location on the peninsula, where new yard are now In the course of construction, at a coat of something orer jzuu.ouu. There were a number of mall packing house the latter changed, hands a number of time and were fre quently Idle. In 1897 they were reorganized; three large packing housea locating there, which hava been very much enlarged since, and are making addition and ex tensions every year. '1909, In time to, take care of the heavy apring rush An exchaage building will be erected , to take care of the stockyards' force and i the present and future commission firm. In thl building will also be lo cated the stockyards bank, which will begin business on the opening of the Vards. I i A hotel will be erected to take care jof the shippers, buyers and others who Wlil maae ineir neanquaners mere. 4 Th floor throughout the yards will he concrete, enapea up to resemble tirick, thus furnishing good foothold for stock; a complete sewerage and water ays tern will be installed; Bun Run water will b avaiiaoie ror tne stoca and a large capacity tank filled from the Co - lumbla for fire protection and sanitary nurBcae will he erected. With th O. R. A N. and Southern Paolflo drawing rrom uregon. callfor rila. Idaho and Wyoming, and the North Bank road drawing from practlcaUv all of Washington, northern Idaho and Mon tana, It la assured that the new yards .will b the distributing point for the entire northwest. ' Buyera for the large parking hounes In Portland, Seattle and Tacoma will retire from th country and get their supplies direct from the yards, which .will cut out needless expense. What tb location of parking houses and atockyard will do for Portland Is beat shown by results obtained In varl-1 Tear Car. 1903 51,067 1904 49,066 1905 61,819 1908 52,980 19UI 64,127 1 hava InernAfiAA flv I time, rrom bu.o4,i9. In 1896, to $276. 601,798 In 1907;. potoffic and customs receipts nearly doubled; and assessed valuations Increased mora than 100 per cent; population has also Increased 100 per cent, and it la pretty generally con ceded that tha most of this growth date from the starting of tha livestock market. The disbursements to the stock trn. ers of the northwest for stock alone should exceed $20,000,000 In tha first year, nearly all of which will be handled by tha banker of Portland. Few people In Portland realise the im mense Importance of this lndustrv in ine cuy, ana 10 tne whole northwest, regardless of state lines. Large and email stockmen and farm ers should cooperate with the packing house and stockyard by keeping more of their breeding atuff, particularly in the matter of hogs, tralnloads of which packer ar forced to buy away from home. With tha great Dosslbllltiea this country for diversified farming . n this should be changed and the north west he In a position to sell hnr nm. dutcs instead of buying. swum j. Mf.vmtfm.
