Lebanon, Or,, Sept 1.- That there will soon be no deer to speak of In the Ore- fon mountains is the belief of uan lmons, a prominent Linn county pio neer and one of the oldest hunters In the state. Mr. Simon lays the rapid passing of the game animals to the depredations of the cougar and will be one of the foremost In favor of enact ing a bounty law on cougar scalps. mere is no- one in tne state Deteer qualified than Mr. Simons to speak on fame conditions. Mr. Simons, who Is S years of age. came to Oregon In 1851 and on October 8 of the same year en camped on the spot which Is now his i home.- He Is one of the heaviest tax payers In Linn county and Is willing to be assessed to provide a bounty fund! He thinks there should be a one-mill assessment .to cover the bounty. He estimates that there are over 600 cougars in -the state. . A half thousand of these nredatorv cats set awav with more deer than all the hunters in the state, ne says, irrom his experience wun uiem ns estimates mat ine cougars will average' one deer a week for feed.
