THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, TUESDAY EVENING, - AUGUST 25, 1908. PLEHTY OF MID WORKMEN HURT WHEN TRESTLE COLLAPSES, DITCHING TRAIN III - ' ' . 'v FOR COURT WORK Circuit J udffc Advocates Use of West Side High School for Courthouse. The euggeHtlon that the county ac quire the old Wet Hide High school for a courthouse doea not appear to be meet ing with much fuvor with the county olTichils The locution would bo too lar away, tlrt'.y think, from the business center o! the city and would make It In convenient f,,r attorneys ami others who nine business ul the courthouse. 'nuiity Commissioner William I l.lghiner docs not approve of the sug gestion, although he euys he haa not gone deeply into .the mutter, nn the Idea hum only Hugsjestert to hlin by one or me clicult court Judge". I don't think we couiil Mud a better site than the onu on which the court house Is located at present," he said this morning. "My Idea would be to build a new courthouse rlgll here and build a larger one. Wo are badly crowded now, especially In aome depart ments. The tax office, has been cramped for several years on account of lack of room, ahd other departments are slml larly situated. This courthouse was put tip a good many years ago, and Port land has greatly outgrown it. We need a new one. And I think that If we do build a new one we ought to put up one extra story that we do not need now. That would allow of room for growth as the city grows. "It might be possible to tear down half of this building at a time and put up a new building. 1 don't know how that would be. That Is a matter upon which an architect would have to pass. "Hut I do not believe that the high school would do at all for a courthouse. It Is as much out of date as this build ing and It la old and generally unsuit able. .No, 1 don't think wo could Im prove upon the present site." The proposal to buy the. high school for a courthouse was made tcntntlvelv by one of the circuit Judges, more, he says, as a suggestion than anything else, and he does not rare to be quoted as proposing that the deal be made. "I merely advanced the idea," he said, "to see how it would be taken. Hut I don't believe It is meeting with much layor among the county officials. "Yet 1 bellMve the suggestion Is a good fine. That part of town will not be so far from the bUBlneiis center of the city one of these days, for the busi ness section is already growing In that direction and several Cilg blocks are go ing up not so far from the high school. I no ingli school building has moms and is well planned for a court house. And vie arc greatly In need of more room, W have only two Jury rooms in this buildine:. and ii sonistinios happens that we have three Juries out at mi' c.
