Thompson & Swan Citizens Nat. Rank., Vancouver, Wnsh. The indication warmer vvi-ither in and Wediesd.iy. At the Orpheum Vaudeville. To Mr. and Mrs. Erwtn Connelly Is due some measure of gratitude. They have taken the one-act playlet, the "tabloid" drama, and depicted human nature with It. Tlusy have left out the burglar and the lady crook and tho hotel bellboy; they have lgnorfed the dramatic possibilities that He hidden beneath the ruffles of the soubrette. But If their nerve had been stronger our rralse would have been longer. After taking nn with "Sweethearts" and carrying it along thev bump up against the bugaboo of the unhappy ending. And so they change a very pretty little act into a dramatization of the latest octogeneri.m wedding. "Sweethearts" is well written and well acted until It contradicts itself in the last few lines. The author has carefully gone through two Bcenes to establish the sentimental contrast of man and woman. And then he s made to say that there isn't any difference after all. But, in spite of the ending, the Connellys do the piece uncommonly well, particularly the first scene. Leaving the Connellys and their twisted sentiment, you will be best pleased with Bertie Herron. Bertie is not twisted, but is a twist. Her jokes are good, although a few of them should scarce scamper about the Btage much longer. Her stories are racy, and she is infectiously good-natured. She is a minstrel girl, according to the program, and she is a success at It. The Burke's, John and Mae, are funny in an act called "How I'atsy Went to War. Alf Grant and Ethel' Hoag however, outlive the night's festivities with ease. Ethel doesn't do much but -wear bceomlng clothes and look well, but Alf is good, very good. If he omitted his own compositions he would be better. And towards the end you catch your self coiigiatulating yiairself that be isn't on for all evening. But notwith standing that his dialogue and bis stories are funny enough to be remem bered. Marllnette and Sylvester, known as "the suicide kids" tried a suicide yes terday afternoon and as a result Syl vester almost succeeded. They are acro bats and Sylvester will be off tiie boards for a few days ,as the result i f a fall. Martinette goes on alone, how ever, and does some "remarkable con tortionist feats. The headllner, known as "A Night r.n a Houseboat." is an act carrying with it a company of nine people, a house boat, a few dozen Chinese lanterns and an electric searchlight. This modest outfit doesn't entertain as much as you might expect, although it is unusually well staged. The bill as a whole Is brighter than was last week's.
