R. A N ha Invented what experts Bay Is the surest aafety device known to modern rail roedlng and which makes collisions practically Impossible where It Is used. The Invention la to he Kiverv, a trial this week by ttie eight general super intendents of the Harrimara lines who are holding a genil-annual conference In this city. J. fihannon, the Inventor of the de vice, has been conducting hlB expert - menta at Oraham station, near Monta vllla. He says that the trials have met with complete success. The device is elmple and is Intended "to supplement the work of the sema phore. It; consists of a spring of holier flate placed scar the rail within the rack. Whenever the semaphore arm I" 0own, that Is. points to safety and Ihowa the track Is clear, the sprint; releases Itself and Is at a level with the rail. Hut as soon as the semaphore arm points to danger the spring flies up six or eight Inches above the t rack. A locomotive is fitted with an tr"n shoe suspended beneath the cnb nnd st tnched to the throttle. This shoe Ih forced up as the locomotive passes over the spring nnd shuts off the throttle, thus bringing the train to n stop. In case the engineer wishes to dis regard the danger signal --as. fur In stance. In the case of wrecking trains or helper engines he can set the shoe from the cab and it will not act upon the throttle. liallroad records show that K3 per cent of the serious accidents are caused hv disregarding danger signals It Is claimed by Shannon that If his devic is put Into use the. "human equation" Is reduciil to almost nothjng. An en gineer can die at his post but his train will be brought to an instant stop hv the action ot the spring and the steel shoe Michael J. Bnckley. general su perintendent of the Harrlman lines in Oregon has Inspected the device and he Is anxious to have the other gener-.l superintendents who are present at the con f err-nee also see It and pass upon It. 1 I i t it.' t" .VI' I ' ' ' 1 I I, t I '1,1' t ,i. ii. ! THE WICKED ICE MAN, HOW SOON HE CAN CHILL A WARM RECEPTION How would you like to be the lazy, listless, languid Ice man? Of course this applies only to one Ice man In par ticular. Consternation by the failure of Mr. 1, -ennui to nppear was caused In the neighborhood of Sixteenth and Mont gomery streets day before yesterday. Mr. Iceman had been "overcome" with the heat, or something of the sort. Any way, Mr. Iceman didn't appear all day. It was one of the hottest days of the season. Rrlght and earlv the house keepers on the side of the hill above Montgomery, and all over that part of the city, were up earlv arranging to keep the milk sweet, putting the vege tables in their respective places and banging out the "Ice wanted ' signs in prominent places where they would lie sure to he seen. Noon came; no Ice man. Then 1 o'clock, and so "n around the dial of the clocks. And still no Ice man. Then the women decided that he wasn't a nice man. Consternation was going on every where. Telephones were all busy, each woman trying to telephone the other of her troubles. Somewhere, someplace, somehow. Mr. Tceman was loitering under the shnd" ?f a sheltering palm -probably an arti Iclal one where cool breezes from an electric fan cooled bis brow, which was not troubled one by-any means. Hv his side was a glass of teed buttermilk or something. And amid, all these luxurious furnish ings and surroundings the Ice man en Joyed himself to his heart's content. The women along- his route kicked and fussed and telephoned and stood by and watched the milk and the cream and the vegetables al! o to the bad. And the Ice man why, he was having tho time of his life Out on the back porches the "Ice wanted" signs w ei e not taken down nil til yesterday. Another be man was tin the Job. There are o'Ki beautiful horses with Ihe Barnum and P.ailey greatest shows on earth which will give two exhibitions here next Tuesilay and Wednisdav. One of the especially interesting sights is the perform.! in of two niam uiQths in getting out of their huge ear. Tl'.o other elephants m this remark able r.rd of 4U rare specimens of Asl B tic and African origin In vacating their traveling compartments walk down a heavy gangplank that iii'Ilncs from the car eoor down to the -ground. The car doors an- 10 feet high, whi' li Of, course makes the big elephants -loop to get through as they step on' upon the I descending plank. The two mammoths are so t-nll and so wide, however, thjit thev cannot get out of the ,:ir door until ihe gangplank Is . taken away. They therefore calmly wait until all f their traveling mates have "walked the plank' and are grouped together awaiting the coming of their leaders Then It Is that the two monsters get In motion, find prove that they know a thing or two about tho solution of mathematical problems Thev drop to their knees, and wriggling their great bodies forward slowly manage to get their front feet out and upon the ground. The floor of the car is about five feet above the ties of the roadway, but this does not keep them from leaching the solid foundation of the earth without mishap or trying delay. Once their fore feet are on the ground thev rlraw their bodies forward, allowing their hind legs to drag along th,. car floor. In this way they are soon able to get one hind foot out and then the rest Is easy. Thev act as If they toolt more or les's pride In this feat, and as soon as It Is a-'hievd . thev begin to trumpet and wave their trunks with an energy that bespeaks deep-seited satisfaction' The waiting group of elephants greet this i signal of their leaders with an effective! nispiav or their own. and begin to am ble in a circle with the hurried -ga it that makes their ring performance both as tonishing and pleasing. The five herds of elephants form nn attractive feature of the free street pa rade which will leave the sh, ,w grounds id. out 10 o'clock in the morning of show I nay. In tho 1! counfb's of southwest Mis souri containing swamp or overflowed lands, 31 drainage ditches or canals have been constructed, with a total length of about ti'Hl miles. These ditches have reclaimed Hon acres of land. THE LAZIEST MA IT IN THE WORLD would not be contented to be kept In the house and doing nothing hv rheumutlsrn.
