THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SUNDAY MORNING, AUGUST 9, 1908. II CITY BEAUTIFUL Elevatod Boulevard Ovex the Chicago Itivcr Settle- 1 inont of Great Fortune Hearst's Convention Sidelights. JAP CONCOCTS uRMijinii (Sfrlal niiimtrh tn Tha Jonroal.) t'lil.-BBo, Aug. 8. The first stop pro posed tiy the 'Commercial club of Chl cngo In a RAneral "city beautiful" scheme, an elevated boulevnrd over the Chicago rlvor to connect the north and bouIIi bU!c boulevards and park systems, has received a black eye. For some "mysterious reason" the boulevards committee of the club advocated a long causeway or viaduct which would cost from 16.000,000 to 110,000,000 but tho taxpayer who would have to foot the Mils rose up wrathfully and declared that tho viaduct not only would be but "a rich man's causeway," a "speedway for automobiles," a "wart" and deface ment instead of an Improvement, but tlint such a urotPHque structure would make Chicago's efforts to dress up gTO teaijue Instead of admirable. Mrs. Pot ter Palmer, among others, denounced the plan and during recent years she has seen much of European boulevards where beauty has been attained, has Fpen more of them than of Chicago's busy streets. In fact. A majority of the members of the committee which pro posed the objectionable speedway were found to live In suburbs of the city und on unfortunate self Interest was disclosed by the hostllo property own ers. The connecting boulevard seems likely to be constructed, but on the surface whore all clnsscs of people would benefit, and the result of this will he the completion of a beautiful thorouchfnre through the heart of the city, where property owners will be encouraged to erect handsome buildings. In the place of the dingy ones of the present. This boulevard will be flanked with trees and parking and a plaza, where now Is the ce-nter of the whole hale district, will he made on a scale to rival the attractions of Pnrls. Chi cago seems determined to dress up In eplte of blunders. Settlement of Fortune. The settlement of the $25,000,000 trusteed fortune left by Otto Yotinir of this city, one of the largest which has yet In the United States been tied up in trust, haB been complicated by the arrival of a J3, 000, 000 grandchild. Sam uel K. Martin Jr.; who Immediately became one of the richest babies in his own right in the world. His arrival, however, not only cost the six other heirs of the Young fortune his portion, a sei'enth, of the estate, but postponed the final settlement of the trusteeship for 21 years. He makes the seventh heir. By the peculiar provisions of the l oung will the present Tortune Its accumulations is to go in Incident', Sandajire Shin eki Cleans, Up a Little "Easy Money."
