I THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, TUESDAY EVENING, AUGUST 4. 1003. J J!1 .USUI ,U11, - . t. FORTS THE, DAY Ring Track Diamond Held JOE KNIGHT JR. AND HIS REMARKABLE CHARGER PORTLAND CLUB PAYS EXPENSES Irving'ton Tennis Players Will Go Xorth by Selec tion of Committee. RED HOT GOSSIP FOR RABID FANS Portland will' become a factor In the tennla world If the efforts of the Ir vlngton Tennis club avail anything: Heretofore Portland has been represent d at various northwest and const tour naments only by the Individual efforts or tnfl players, llerearter the organiza tion will take a hand In the selection of representatives and meet their ex pense on all the trim north or sooth Three men will be sent north to Ev erett next Mnndav to renresent the Ir vlnKton filub in the International Tennis championships, which commence on that date. President Hamilton at a meeting yesterday, appointed the following com mlttee to select the players: F. H. V, Pilchard Wilder. There will probably be a meeting or the committee this arter noon to name the players to represeuX the club. , Portland is represented In the tennl tournament now in progress at Tacoma by Miss Ruth Honeyman. Miss Lead better had entered for the pluy, but found It Impossible to go north. Wal ter Goes, the local expert, stated this morning mat lie was undecided about going; to Tacoma. If he Is to have a place In the challenge rounds he will have to leave for that city by tomorrow night. If Mr. Gohs goes he will probn- Diy piay wun Aj K. Krepman or Cali fornia In the men's doubles at Tacoma. Whether or not any of the women Players will go to the Kverett tourna ment Is not certain. Several have slg- nmea an intention or going north, but no womon have been Included in the new policy of the club. This Is probably the first instance on the coast where a club has stood for all the expenses. The local organiza tion was encouraged by the success of me stale tournament last month, and it is planned to make Portland a city of importance so far ns the tennis map Is t:(JJlut5I lieu. TALIFEKO JOIXS A GIRL BASEBALL TEAM (Hpectal Dispatch to The .Journal.) springrieltl, Or.. Aug. 4. Charlie Tsllafero, a bnsebnll pitcher, whose home Is In Springfield, who recently returned from the Pendleton too in of the Eastern Oregon league, has joined the Chicago girls' ttarn as a pitcher. When the team left Springfield thero were only two girls on the team who were able to bat. Threo of the mon dressed as women, but at that they Had to borrow a local man to fill In. Talla fero Is too large to pass as a woman In any disguise, and will play In the box. NATIONAL LEAGUE GAMES. This Is the day upon which we start our series In the south. If the team Is In good condition we ought to win a majority of the series. The pitchers are 11 working well for the first time since the season opened. The regulars are In pretty good trim and under the new si rangement. Ryan In right and Johnson at tnirn. ougnt to present a goon rront. If the team breaks even the fans will be satisfied, but there are those who feel certain that the Beavers will re turn homo August 26 wllh the big end or me games. How would the fans like to see Mickey La Longe, the San Francisco catcher, filling a backstop position on the Portland team next season? It was only by the smallest chance that Mickey was not a member of the Beaver squad this year. He would be tickled to death to play In Portland, and Manager Me Oedlo would like to have him. Very likely McCredle and Long may come to some terms regarding the llttlo re ceiver. La Lonire Is one of the snap plest Havers on tp circuit and to keep him Danny Long turned Slug Slnttery over to tho Oakland team during tho training season. Claude Berry nas worker! nearlv all season through or ders of Captain Mohjer and Mickey has not been given the cnanee ne uesires Her" could have had a glorious, oppor tunity with Portland this season. Cincinnati won't get Catcher Bob Easterly of Los Angeles for awhile yet. Garry Hermann Is mighty anxious to cot I.oh Anaeles' best backstop and made Henry Berry a tempting offer for immediate delivery, tserry says no maj sell Easterly at the end of the' sea son hut he neons moo now. c ran Chance of Chicago has first call on the youngster. Dolly Gray is another puiyer rterrv will lose next season, but Hen want's to hook him onto a winning club, whet his pitching will not Le wasted. Think of Asher Houston, the local boy now with Oakland, being given a chance to work regularly with the Greeks. This is what might come of new arrangement van iiuuren is about to spring nn the fans. an may take Hngan -oil third Daso unci use mm In the box. Time was when Jiogan was a nlftv slnbster and a long rest may hiv ,inn him some good. II an puts through this arrangement Houston will get a chance to perform regularly around the difficult station. So far he has not had much of a chance to show his worth. There Is no pluce in tho Pacific league for Jim Morlev, who nearly wrecked the organization after the quake. Mor ley 18 being touted for manager of the new team at Venice, with Danny Shay as captain, cai r.wing. psjriut-.ii u.o circuit, savs that while he holds the reins Morlev will never have a chance to crawl In. will nrobablv be the scout the Pacific Coast league will send east In the next week or so. There art Danny Long a lot of players needed to supply tho vacancies in the old clubs caused by sales and draft and then the two new clubs will need snout thirty or forty players to choose from. Long Is sug gested from his experience with the game and knowledge of players. How ever, the man who goes will le named by the directors shortly. Hark! Te fans who have wondered these many moons; "Pop" Derrick, our old friend at Vaughn park. Is umpiring In the Texas Htate league. Christian, the new Oakland pitcher, says Derrick Is officiating as well as any man In the league. The other day Derrick was as saulted by a player and later appeared In court against the fellow, who was fined. Derrick Is a dark, brown taste locally. What kind of a chance would the two-bit boys have against a chap so strenuous as this. It concerns Mooso Baxter, the old Butte player. Down In New Orleans a couple of sharp tongued rooters plckod Moore out. The bom bardment got hotter and thicker until Moose could stand It no longer. Then he did a funny thing. He stamped into the bleachers, grabbed a head In each paw and cracked the two skulls together until said sungods cried hold, enough! Baxter was chased off the lot and a heavy fine tacked on, but he had satis faction. Buddy Ryan and Ote Johnson, take notice. Heine HeltmuIIer and Cleveland are not affinities. Heine evidently could not stand nrosDerttv prosperity mean In ODnortunltv to bo Into'the bis: league next season. Scout n om o Brien toog an option on HeltmuIIer on his trip to the const several weeks ago. The other day a wire came saying that the option had been cancelled. HeltmuIIer slumped something fierce in his batting since the option, and this prompted Cleveland to declare the deui orr. Well, Van Haltren has come to It at last. He has chased Dellar out of the ;ame for a month without pay, hoping hat the big blonde may come back again. Dollar started off the season by winning six straight, and since has lost every game he pitched or started In. Dellar is sore, and says he will get that salary or there will be something doing. They are sore at fclattery over In Oak land because Slug persisted In warming tho bench on the sore hand plea when the team needed his- services with the stick. Some of the cranks have been mean enough to say that Slat Is afraid of his fancy batting average. When Slat was In Portland two wouks ago he could whisk 'em around as nlftlly as the rest of the Greeks. New York has turned "Doc" Newton over to the Newark club. Newton has been a disappointment this year. He has paid no attention to his condition, and cares little whether he wins or loses. It's now up to him to work his way back to the big brush, as he has done on any number of occasions. -'' - j :'a. ' "; .'
