have appeared before tha atate board of
equalization and refused to re(

an assessment upon their property,
Submitting a somewhat Incomplete re
port as to number of cars, etc.. the
Pullman company concludea lta atate
ment with:
"In furnishing the above Information
to the honorable board of equalisation,
that It Is not before said board in lta
cornorate capacity, and It does not ad
mil the Jurisdiction of said board In
tho premises."
The trouble arose last year because
the board could not get any statement
of the gross earnings of the company
In California, and fixed an arbitrary as
sessment, which the company claims Is
too high.

for any one state, as they do not seg
regate the matter In their books. With
a suit just filed agalnat the Pullman

The company s return showed 88
standard cars in operation In the state
this year, nguin.st 8J last year. The ag
gregate value Is given at !i23,957.70 this
year, a gain of J434,S38.L'0 over last
year, which Is attributed to better
equipment.

J. Gillian of Santa Rosa today took
Horace llohlnson, a New York promoter
for the Marconi Wireless company and
the son of a millionaire, from the St.
Francis hotel at Santa Kosn to answer
to tho charge 'of obtaining money under
fulso pretenses. Robinson, who has
characterized his stay of six weeks in
tills city with lavish expenditure of
money, spent all night last night in the
custody of 1 etective Ryan, who stayed
with tj.e "millionaire."
Robinson's trouble resulted from the
alleged sale of 20 shares of Marconi
Wireless for $400 to J. S. Rhodes .f
Santa Rosa. Rhodes charges that the
promoter sold the stock with a guar
antee that it would be redeemed on de
mand and that he had several times
visited the promoter at the St. Francis
and demanded his money bark.
Robinson was extremely nervous when
Informed last night that ho was under
arrest.
"I haven't robbed a bank or stolen
any money or anything else," he ex
plained, Robinson was recently sued by J. 1..
filenn, a wealthy race track man, fiv
$60,000 damages for alienating the af
fections of his wife. Mrs. (Jlenn visited
the arrested man at his apartments lust
night when she learned of his trouble.

Louis Dabner. the other condemned
thug, seems to be unconcerned as to

through the federal courts. If he does'
not, he says, he will hang like a man.

Miller, aged 25 years, who robbed the
home of L. C. Bradley at 1216 A street
and made away with the timepiece and
other articles of value.

the Standar saloon about 10:30 at
night heard a stringe mechanical nolsa

hurriedly around the corner. The
thought of an infernal machine flashed
through the officer's mind; still he
pressed In upon the stranger and be
gan to Investigate. He found that
Miller in trying to conceal the clock

Miller was fined $50 and costs In
