While they have fold a con elderable amount of cheese of late, evry box that left the Cheese clly has be-n Old at exactly the price the ilers caked. They are not shading their values a fraction In order to do busi ness. , . "At Tillamook the situation Is a moat unusual one. Generally speaking there la a larire surplus of cheese there Just nr.vlmi. nnd after the .flush of the sea inn hut now the flush of the season over and everything Is cleaned up. Local Cheese Market Vary rirm. The local cheese market Is very firm at the recently advanced values, no alea being reported under the flgus-s . ,,iri ttnm interests are talking cl boosting prices another fraction. Thpri. Is nothing of Interest transplr in? in the local butter market at this time, values being held quite sttff ut the recently advanced values owing to the smaller make. There Is only a fair tone ruling In the local egg market at this time. While Interests bringing In oaste-n tock are endeavoring to put an arti ficial value on the local product In or der to make more money on their Im ported stork, those who really do a regular business In local eggs find the Situation far from being strong. While an occasional sale of eggs may be re ported along the street as high as jc a dozen, this is for extra select stoik end practically all the business Is done around 24c. Once In a while a sale Ik reported at 23 He A car of eastern ggs arrived yesterday and stimulated the outsiders to boost the price of local utock to a figure where they could un load their own while local eggs remained Tinsold. Same old scheme which is worked every year. Carmicheal Stops Hop Contracta. NO' more 10c contracts on the coming hop crop are being written at this time. .The authority for this statement is ijohn Carmiehael of Salem, who has to date done all of the 10c business. 'I am not in the market for contracts at ;the present time at 10c," Mr. Car miehael told The Journal. Other deal ers report a general absence of business locally. The New York Producers- Trice Cur rent elves the following view of the lion situation In its latest issue: 'The inactivity in the local market continues and there are no Immediate prospects of a revival of business. The only Interesting features are the crop reports. From New York state heavy ehowers are reported from all sections which will undoubtedly have a good effect on both the quantity and quality. The vine is reported to be entirely free from vermin and promises a fairly good yield. From England all prospects point to a very good crop both In quan tity and quality and the continental re ports could not be better. In New York state sor.'.e buying is reported of the lower grades at from 3Sj4c, about ?;0 bales having been sold at these prices." Brief Notes of the Trade. Local peaches are very scarce with prices higher. A shipment of fine i:l bertas from California is reported. Priced at S0c$l. Loganberries arrived in bad shape today. Cherry market is firmer and price is advanced 2ic a box for fancy Lamberts. (Season closing. Wild blackberries are arriving more freely and are in fine demand at 10c a pound. According to an advice received by Fecretary Miller of the board of trade from M O. LonnsUiile the apple crop of the Willamette valley Is about Tfi per rent of the normal. He reports Baldwins very scarce, Spitzenberss about a 60 per cent crop, Ben Davis and Yellow Newtons about 00 per cent rop. The June crop was very heavy on Borne varieties, reducing the yield from a !"0 per cent crop to 5 per cent. Tho situation today somewhat re sembles the 1904 situation, for the trado Is talking lust as wildly of damage by rust. If the rust continues to spread it will cause a runaway market, say even the most conservative traders. S40 Because they Jld not py for tha gas consumed or for ranges or mantles pur chased, 20 householders of Portland have been made defendant In suits filed today in the Justice court by tha Portland Oaa company. It haa usually been the custom for the gas company merely to shut off the gas of delinquent subscribers, and only a very few such cases have been brought heretofore. The filing of these suits by Attorney James E. Cralb means the adoption of a new policy by the gas company. "Under the old'' system of simply shutting off the gas when consumers became delinquent It cost the company about $10,000 a year," said Attorney Cralb this morning "and henceforth such bills will be collected through the courts If necessary. "Tho company also proposes to In stitute test cas.es against consumers having purchased gas on what Is termed an average monthly" basis. These cases are the results of meters that fall to register the actual amount of gas pass ing through so that while- the average bill would bo, say $10 a month, it might, for one month, be but $1. "Consumers have refused to pay more than for the actual quantity Indicated bv the meter although they know per fectly well that they used as much gas that month as on the average before. These cases will be carried to the su preme court." THEKE ITAYE BEEN COOL DAYS L AUGUST Sheep. 1,400 3.000 3,000 Latest News of Oregon Crops Ilverpool Wheat Market. Liverpool, July 30..
