OIL FUEL FOR sinrs SUCCESSFUL After seeing a man, then a criminal, 10 years ago in Minneapolis, Patrolman John Goltz recognized the man when he saw him this morning In Portland. Goltz was a deputy sheriff In Min neapolis, lie arrested George Smith for the theft of a watch, and Smith served a term for the crime. Y'ester day a man was arrested for drunken ness. This morning Goltz saw him. "Your name Smltli?" asked the officer. "It is," said the man. "When did you leave Minnesota?" "I was never there; I came from Iowa." "Are you real sure about that?" The man looked hard at Goltz. "Say, He had reached Portland yesterday. The first Taft-Sherman presidential gun in Oregon was fired last night at the Haker theatre, where the Forty fifth Precinct Republican olub enter tained at a rally addressed by Senator Fulton. The enthu siasm did not seem to be dampened by the humidity of the atmosphere, ana everything went off as If It had been Planned by the promoters of t meet ing. President Ren Rlesland. of the Forty-fifth club, presided at the meet ing, called It to order and stated the object of the gathering. He Introduced Mr. Wheelwright who spoke briefly. He was followed by Judge Northup, who also made a short address, after which Senator Fulton was introduced for the address of the evening. The senator spoke at some length, going Into the political Issues as he saw them and pleading for united support from the Republicans of Multnomah county and of the state for the Repub lican presidential leaders. The speaker reviewed his work In congress, and told of what he expected to do during the remaining time he had to spend there. He pledged him self to secure a large appropriation for the continuation of the work on the Columbia river har. He touched on the currency question. "on tariff reform and the other big issues of the day which nre to be or should be considered by the coming congress, and contended that a Republican congress would set tle the questions and that there should lo a Republican president to see. that thev were enforced and carried out. Senator Fulton said he had not been able to understand the Injunction plank of the Democratic platform, and con tended that the courts never granted injunctions unless there was danger of destruction to property, whether the dispute was over labor or anv other cause for dispute. At tee conclusion or Senator Fuu ton's address the question of organiz ing a Taft club was taken up. and a committee consisting of W. M. Cake. J. P. Kennedy. George L. Raker, Henry Westhrook. James Kercheni and Hen Rlesland was appointed to draft the plans for the new organization.
