Point have been reported to the office
of Heeretary It. C. Yenney of the Btate
Board of Health. The aufferers from
the m-lld enldomle are not In nny dan
ger of death and the health officer has
taken steps to prevent tlie spread of
the disease.
Eastern Oregon boasts of a number
of good schools, among which Pendleton
aeudemy Is a leader In several direc
tions. Established primarily as a col
leKe preparatory school and still laying
ctresH upon this part of Its work. It
has added new courses, thus keeping
up with the demands of the public.
Two years ago a course In domestic sci
ence, and another In Instrumental muslo,
were added, which have proven very
satisfactory and attracted numbers of
deserving students. This year an addi
tional course Is offered In vocal music
under one of tho most accompllHhed
vocalists In Oregon. Parents who have
children for whom thev are seeking a
proper school for higher education

Four umbrellas, seven packages, a

on the street cars yesterday and may
be recovered by the owners at the lost

A meeting of the Forty-fifth Pre
cinct Republican club has been called
for tomorrow night. The meeting will
he held In the headquarters of the club
at Enst Twenty-seventh and Powell
streets, and It Is expected that there
will bo a large crowd In attendance.
As a special Inducement, aside from the
speeches which are scheduled to be de
livered, the club management has ar
ranged for a largo barrel of Iemonado
spiced with a hundred-pound chunk of
Ice. These will be garnished with a

An Incoming Northern Pacific train
was found to carry a number of free
list passengers, so soon after 3 o'clock
this morning 10 men were rounded up
hv Patrolmen Parker and Fuller and
sent to the police station. It was all
the patrol wa-gon could do to carry them
to headquarters. Nearly all were young
working men, beating their way south.

joicing. The New York State society will hold
Its monthly rendezvous on the river

ey than financial prudence who pay

uations that result are side-racking.
Especially to bo noted In the course
of the evening were the songs all of
which won repeated encores from the
large audience which filled the alrdonie.

After seeing a man, then a criminal,
10 years ago in Minneapolis, Patrolman
John Goltz recognized the man when
he saw him this morning In Portland.
Goltz was a deputy sheriff In Min
neapolis, lie arrested George Smith
for the theft of a watch, and Smith
served a term for the crime. Y'ester
day a man was arrested for drunken
ness. This morning Goltz saw him.
"Your name Smltli?" asked the officer.
"It is," said the man.
"When did you leave Minnesota?"
"I was never there; I came from
Iowa."
"Are you real sure about that?"
The man looked hard at Goltz. "Say,

had reached Portland yesterday.
The first Taft-Sherman presidential
gun in Oregon was fired last night at
the Haker theatre, where the Forty
fifth Precinct Republican olub enter
tained at a rally addressed by Senator
Fulton. Judge II. H. Northup and W.
D. Wheelwright.
A big crowd braved the heat and
followed the band to the playhouse,
where It applauded the names of Taft,
Sherman and Fulton, and everything. In
fact, which was thought to afford an
opportunity for applause. The enthu
siasm did not seem to be dampened by
the humidity of the atmosphere, ana
everything went off as If It had been
Planned by the promoters of t meet
ing. President Ren Rlesland. of the
Forty-fifth club, presided at the meet
ing, called It to order and stated the
object of the gathering. He Introduced
Mr. Wheelwright who spoke briefly.
He was followed by Judge Northup,
who also made a short address, after
which Senator Fulton was introduced
for the address of the evening. The
senator spoke at some length, going
Into the political Issues as he saw
them and pleading for united support
from the Republicans of Multnomah
county and of the state for the Repub
lican presidential leaders.
The speaker reviewed his work In
congress, and told of what he expected
to do during the remaining time he
had to spend there. He pledged him
self to secure a large appropriation
for the continuation of the work on the
Columbia river har. He touched on the
currency question. "on tariff reform and
the other big issues of the day which
nre to be or should be considered by
the coming congress, and contended
that a Republican congress would set
tle the questions and that there should
lo a Republican president to see. that
thev were enforced and carried out.
Senator Fulton said he had not been
able to understand the Injunction plank
of the Democratic platform, and con
tended that the courts never granted
injunctions unless there was danger of
destruction to property, whether the
dispute was over labor or anv other
cause for dispute.
At tee conclusion or Senator Fuu
ton's address the question of organiz
ing a Taft club was taken up. and a
committee consisting of W. M. Cake.
J. P. Kennedy. George L. Raker, Henry
Westhrook. James Kercheni and Hen
Rlesland was appointed to draft the
plans for the new organization. It Is
Intended that the Portland club shall
be the first and head olub of a series
to be organized throughout the state.
