July 17.--The fiscal year. ended June SO has been the record year of American shipbuilding, according to i reports to the bureau of navigation, and the center of the lnduatry la on the Urent Lakes. P'.irlng the year, 1,506 vessels of fKR,27 gross tons were built and num bered In the United States, of which 8 strel steamers of 804 and Si9 gross tons were built on the Great Lakes. The largest annual output heretofore was In the year 1856. when 2,024 vessels of 581,480 tons were built. In that year the Great Lakes built only 2S vessels of 45,421 tons.
