Washington. July 17.--The fiscal year.
ended June SO has been the record year
of American shipbuilding, according to i
reports to the bureau of navigation,
and the center of the lnduatry la on the
Urent Lakes.
P'.irlng the year, 1,506 vessels of
fKR,27 gross tons were built and num
bered In the United States, of which
8 strel steamers of 804 and Si9 gross
tons were built on the Great Lakes.
The largest annual output heretofore
was In the year 1856. when 2,024 vessels
of 581,480 tons were built. In that
year the Great Lakes built only 2S
vessels of 45,421 tons.
This year steel vessels built num
bered 142 of 417.187 gross tons, com
pared with, .IfiO.fifiX tons built last year.

mestic transportation, no vessels ex
clusively for foreign tride having been
built in the United States. .
Of of the 142 steel vessels. 85 ex

iam M. Mills of 7. 961 tons, and 30 on
the seaboard, the largest being the Co
lumbian of 8,679 tons, built at San
Francisco for trade to Hawaii.
Four wooden sailing vessels exceeding
1,000 tons earn were built during the
year, the largest being the Edward J.
Lawrence of 3,350 gross tons.

caught In this part of the river
became entangled in the net of
John Pethman last night. Find
ing that It was impossible to get
the fish Into his boat, he towed
It to the wharf and obtained as
sistance In landing It. The mon
ter Is nine and one half feet in
length and welgns 446 pounds.
Mr. Dethman realized nearly 160

Including transfer passengers, rode on the cars of this system. This
gives a good Idea of the responsibility that devolves upon motormen
and conductors of the various ltnea and indicates the care thai must
be exercised In the selection of men for these positions.
The closest attention Is paid to this branch of the business of the
Transportation Department, because it Is realized that It la necessary
to have men who can be relied upon to meet any and all emergeji
clea, as well as to go through the day's work with a pleasant and
accommodating spirit. Rules hava been adopted regulating the em
ployment of men for these places, which reduce toi a minimum the
chance for an incompetent person to secure a position on the cars.

The course that; applicants go through is very Interesting, show
ing, aa it does, the care taken to get good men. The Portland Hall
way, Light & Powsr Company employs over 800 car men. Applica
tions for positions as motormen and conductors are received at the
Offices of the Superintendent of Transportation, at First ami Alder
streets and East Water street and Hawthorne avenue. Applicants
are) received personally by the Superintendents, and applications are
accepted from those giving suitable references. The applicant is then
subjected to an examination by tne company's jjhysiciun a to Ins
general physical condition, and particularly as to his eyesight After
the examination Is concluded, physician's certificate is returned to tt.e
Superintendent, and. If satisfactory, the applicant is eligible fnr em
ployment. A complete record of the applicants is kept, and as fast as
they are needed, they are placed under the instruction of competent
men familiar with every detail of the duties which they will be re
quired to perform.

One of the most important requirements from the street railway a
point of view Is that all employee shall be courteous to passengers
aod patient at all times. The position of a public service employe is
frequently a trying one .Some people fel that they have a right to
abuee him. At times it become necessary to dismiss men. This may
be fo any one of many reasons. While men may otherwise be com-
petewt, their manner mar be discourteous to passengers, or the-y may
