THE OREGON ' DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND. SATURDAY EVENINO. JULY 18. ' 1906V 13 LINER ROSE CITY iS BIG CROWD Leaves Ainsworth Dock With Every First-lass Berth Taken. STEAM SCHOONERS ALSO GO CROWDED Many Are Left Behind When Big Liner Pulls Out, the Tardy Ones Declining to Accept Steerage A coinmodations. With 862 passengers on board and til the freight she could carry, the Harrl man liner Rob City, Captain Kldston departed thla morning from Alnaworth dock for San Franclaco. Shs would hav had more passengers had the late com era been content with steerage accom modations. The first clasa bertha had been reserved Ion before the hour of departure. Traffic between Portland and Ban Francisco Is steadily increasing and It Is heavier this summer than ever be fore. Not only -do the regular liners ' get capacity crowds but she independent and Irregular steam schooners seldom come in or depart with room to apare. Thla la the finest time of the year for ocean traveling and tourists are not losing sight of this fact But there is also a good steady stream of trafflo outside of the tourist crop. Portland people take a run to the Bay City for a little outing and San Franclsans come north for the same purpose. The steam schooner Yosemfts sailed last night for San Diego via San Fran claco, carrying 875,000 feet of lumber and a full list of paasengera. DIAMOND O IS SPEEDY. WALTON GOES TO PEN FOR HEALTH Charles W. Walton, convicted after three aucceaalve trials last month, and sentenced to serve three yeara In the penitentiary for shooting Patrolman Olaua Nelaon In September, l0t. has decided to go to Salem without further delay. Yesterday afternoon Presiding juage uwy granted a request revolt Ing the writ of probable ca-uso that had been secured. This will not atop prureeainga on appeal, wnicn win oe rushed through to the supreme court. Walton's attnrnev stated that his client's health Is poor under confine ment In the county jail, and he desires 10 return 10 Malem, where ne nad been for more than three yeara while the appeal from his first conviction was being carried to a conclusion. Origin ally ne was sentenced to five yeara for shooting Nelson and to 20 years for holding up a Willamette Heights street car. Whether or not Walton will be tried again on the latter charge Is a ques tion for District Attorney Cameron to decide. In view of the fact that the witnesses are scattered, that convic tion might be even more difficult than t was In the Nelson case, ana that Walton will have served nearly seven ears In all when hie present sentence s comDleted. it la uniiKeiv mat ne will ever be brought to trial on the other charge. dwelling. One of the most complete contracts let for the opening up and Improve ment of any district In the oity of Port land was the one let to Elwood Wiles for preparing the grounds formerly oc cupied by the old Irvington race track for residence property. Mr. Wiles has not onlv the oontract for grading the streets, but the laying of the sewer, water and arfls mains, asphalt stree paving and cement sidewalks. There are at rjreesot about 200 men and 40 teams employed in transforming the old mn. track Into beautiful residence lota. The work is expected to De completed about the middle of November. Upon h cnmnletlon of this contract Mr Wiles will have completed one of the largest undertakings in municipal Im provements ever let to a single contrac tor In the city. Property Owners Complain of Swells Created by Towboat. Owners of property along the water front complain of the tow boat Diamond o exceeding the Breed limit in the har bor. They say that especially while towing the big barge Orient does the craft display her speed with the result that heavy swells tear things up gen erally along the beach. The captains of the steamers Charles R. Spencer and Lurllne were arrested last week for speeding their boats through the harbor and their cases will come up next Thursday In the municipal court. It is .said that the Diamond O has been showing even greater speed than either of the two boats mentioned above nnd a complaint will probably be sworn out against her by one of the property owners, should the authorities fall to do so.
