Mrs. Cameron, matron of the County Jail, has at last secured a coy comer 1 wh.r. aha nun ananrf her leisure mo ments. A room formerly occupied by Marlon R. Bla-es Of land fraud famj and more recently by Horace G. McKln ley of greater renown has been , con verted Into a "home" for the matron, with easy chairs where she may re ceive her friends. The room is newly tinted and comfortably furnished by the county for the use pf the matron. To the other furniture Mrs. Cameron has added her piano, and she now feels quite proud of her quarters. Hereto fore, ever since her appointment last vear, she has had to stay wherever she could find a vacant seat in the main office, the library or the corridors. The annual convocation of the grand lodge of negro Masons Of Washington and Jurisdiction came to a close last night with a reception to the newly elected officers and residing delegates in Foresters' hall, tendered by Enter prise lodge of Portland. The following grand officers were elected at yester day afternoon's session: Grand master, j: E. Hawkins; deputy grand master, James E. Shepperson; senior grand warden, A. S. Aaberry; Junior -grand warden, J. W. Payne; grand secrary. C. S. Parker: grand treasurer, W. D. Allen; grand lecturer, S. A. Stokes. Kmmeti Holmes of SDokana. who de livered the annual oration at last night s reception, was reelected grand orator. Oregon's land fraud mUL - aomswhat out of practice with long disuse but still able to revolve, began another series of revolutions this afternoon the purpose of which la to oonVlct ax-stat senator R. A. Booth, his brother, ex receiver' of the Roseburg land office James Henry Booth, and T, E. Singleton of tho crime of consolracv, to defraud the government out of 160 acres of Ha timber land 1;', Lane county. W, Yesterday afternoon Judge Wolver- tnn overruled demurrers interposed by James Booth and Singleton and cleared the case for the. commencement of the real trial. Senator Booth Interposed no demurrer, having entered a., plea of not guilty immediately after the indict ment hall . been returned against htm April S, 105, by the Henny grand jury. 'me. present case is wnat nas , ueen generally known and talked of as "the ooth case" for the past three years. It Is considered to be one of the big Heney cases and was to have been In cluded in the list of special cases which Heney was to try personally but later changes on the part of Xht original firosecutor of the. land cases has given t Into the hands of District . Attorney McCourt, Judge Becker and T..B. Neu hausen. In the indictment the three defend ants are charged with having induced Thomas Agee to relinquish a claim he held in Douglas county and-take a val uable timoer claim in tane county which claim it Is charged was after wards sold to the Booth Kelly company of which R. A. Booth is president, re ceiving 1300 for the land. The deal. It is charged, was expedited by James Henry Booth as an official of the land Office. The defendants are represented by Judge L. R. Webster, Dan J. MalarkCy and A. C. Woodcock of Albany. The work of drawing the Jury was com menced this afternoon at 2 o'clock. It Is expected that the trial will bo long and tedious because of the great mass of evidence d be introduced by the government and which may require two or possibly tflree weeks for its Introduction and consideration. It Is not believed that the" case will be sent to the Jury much under three weeks and it may be a longer time before all arguments are completed and the court siromus tne case. Patton vice president, -.Dr. Ethel Gray secretary. Dr. Mae Cardwell treasurer, and Dr. E. E. Van Alsine member of, the executive board. After the meet Ins; the members of the club were entertained at the Portland grill by Drs. Manlon and French. Nurses' Cottage Fund Is Growing .The subscription list started by The Journal last Friday for the nurses' cot tage at .the open ' air sanatorium is Hearing the fl.000 mark which waa aet aa the necessary amount to be raised. Many have been glad of this oppor tunity to pay back In, some small meas ure the debt of gratitude which almost everyone has haW occasion to feel to ward the nurses who give of their health and strength for the bulldina ud of others' health. This cot t use ia to be erected at the ooet of 11,000 on a site already selected by the, nurses, and there the nurses will be able to so to recover the strength which the sick room saps even from . the strongest of attendants. Tuberculosis,- that disease which preys upon the weakened system and finds an easy victim In the woman dragged down by incessant care and worry, is one of the ' dread enemies of the tired nurse. ' And It la that these afflicted ministers, to the sick may themselves receive some ot the rest and care ami quiet that they have given others, that this cottage la to be built. The amount needs still 1640 to be complete. Following are the subscrip tions made: H. C. Leonard $200 The Journal ' 10 C. S. Jaekson 10 F. W. Mulkey 10 J. N. Teal : 10 ID EPHIIT El FOR G. 0. P.
