THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 16. . 1908. 15 ILFORD WILL BE HEREHEXT WEEK .British Tramp .Will Carry Valuable Lumber Cargo. GOES TO DENMARK AND GERMANY Left Guaymas, Mexico, About Three) Days Ago and Is Now Well Along Up the Coaat Dollar Liners Will Loud Lumber for Orient. The British steamer I) ford has left Guaymas, Mexico, for the Columbia river and should arrive about next Tuesday. She conies In ballast to carry a full eargj of lumber to Copenhagen and Hamburg under charter to the L. P. Lee Lumber company and the Oregon Pine Export Lumber company. The Ilford will carry away the most valuable lumber cargo ever set afloat from thin port. It being estimated at a value of more than 1100,000. It will consist of hlgh-clnHS decking and spars for use at the large European snlp bulldlng plant n. The cargo will mean tire about 3.000.000 feet and will be furnished by tho mills of the Hammond Lumber company, the Portland Lumber company and the Inman-Poulsen Lum ber company. According to an announcement made this morning the British steamer M. 8. Dollar will also be here In a few days to begin loading lumber for the orient. Bhe will receive her cargo at Llnnton. The M. S. Dollar belongs to the Dollar line of steamers, which Is owned by American capital but operated under the British flag. The large Bessie Dol lar was here a few months ago and took a cargo of lumber, flour and mis cellaneous freight to Japan for Mitsui ft Co. and other shippers. The Hazel Dollar Is the largest of the fleet, her rift register being S.5S1 tons. She is at Moji. Japan, booked to salh for Pan Francisco Stud will probably follow the M. S. Dollar O'lt Of herA slncA It Hna been decided to, make future lumber! UNCLE SAM KEEPS WATCHFUL EYE ON PORTLAND'S WATER SUPPLY In view of the faot that Mayor Lane has announced tho lmmedlais beginning of construction work on the second Dull Run pipe line It will Interest the publlo to know that there Is no danger of the water supply ever being diminished by reason of the sale of timber from the Dull Run forest. Although timber on a reserve Is sold whenever It has matured or Is dead, an exception Is made In the case of water sneds where a community de pends upon the forest protection for the continuation of Its water supply. Few people knew anything about the United States forestry regulations. Many newspapers have a wrong Idea In this connection, too. It Is the gen eral opinion that the government re serves vast tracts of timber absolutely without allowing a single tree to be sold for private use. This Is not true. Tho forestry bu reau, on the contrary, sells all the ma ture and dead timber available for use In the national forests. Laat year 176,000 was derived from this source of revenue In this state. Of this sum the counties In which the timber which was sold stood, get 10 per cent In accordance with the bill passed through the Instrumentality of senator Pulton a year ago lat spring. This year tho amount which the counties receive has been Increased to 26 per cent. The money tliua turned over to the county goes Into the fund for the building of roads and, school houses. GROCERS SORRY IT'S 111 OVER Bonneville Picnic Eclipses All Others in Features and Attendance. TO SAVE MONEY TREAT GAS METER AS IF IT HAD A HEADACHE When you have a scheme to save money, spread the news. Here's a new one: 'It works best In the summer time. when the weather Is waxing hot," a man said this mornlne- as he began to talk of his ingenious flcovery of how he reduces his gag bill each month. And furthermore. I consider my scheme legitimate In every respect. All one hag to do to prevent his gas bill from being as much as is ordinary Is to swath the ga meter In a wet flannel cloth. Underneath the cloth to catch the drippings place a pan. Change the cloth and water every day. "Explanation? Don t ask me. I don't know. But it works. The wet cloth In no ways affects the mechanism of the meter It Just reduces the monthly gas bill. When the inspector Is about due I remove the cloth. A friend told mo about this wet cloth plan. I told another friend. The news Im spreading. I tell you It's a great scheme. Try it." 2:10 a. in., fl.l feet: 8, 28 p. m., 8.4 feet; low, water, 9:00 a. ni., 1.2 feet; :Z5 p. m., z.b feet MARINE INTELLIGENCE. Begrular Liners Due to Arrive.
